In 2021, the Dutch worked at home en masse and it was difficult for car thieves to make off with a car unseen. In 2021, “only” 5,404 cars were stolen. By now the land is open again and our cars are no longer safely parked in front of our house. This is reflected in the theft figures: in the first six months of 2020, 2,900 cars were already stolen. That’s 13 percent more than in the first half of 2021. It is the first increase in 20 years. <\/p>\n

The big cities<\/h2>\n

Especially in the three big cities, many cars have been stolen in the past six months. Two-wheelers too, by the way. 40% of mopeds, motorcycles and bicycles are stolen in the 3 major cities of The Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. <\/p>\n

Volkswagen Golf<\/h2>\n

SUVs have become popular not only among consumers, but also among car thieves. In particular, the Toyota RAV-4<\/a> (196) and Mazda CX-5<\/a> (92) were often taken without permission. The Volkswagen Golf<\/a> also ranks high in the list of most stolen cars, with 139 units, as does the Polo with also 139 units. The most popular brand among thieves is currently Toyota. There have been 476 Toyotas stolen so far in 2022. <\/p>\n

Alarm System<\/h2>\n

Vehicles 4 years old are stolen the most. Especially models with a new price of under \u20ac50,000 often do not have an additional alarm system and are therefore extra vulnerable to theft and carjacking. Keyless entry still appears to be easy to crack with many brands. Tip: fitting an additional CCV approved alarm system and having an existing keyless off can prevent a lot of trouble. <\/p>\n

Components<\/h2>\n

Young used models are often stolen primarily for parts. Parts obtained from theft are used for damage repairs, but also for ordinary technical repairs. Traders in used goods must register their purchases in the Digital Buyers Register from 1 January 2021. This should significantly reduce the trade in stolen parts.<\/p>\n
