BMW built the 1 Series with the same powertrain layout as the larger models, so the 1 Series also had longitudinal engines and rear-wheel drive. Very unusual for a hatchback.<br\/><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bmw-1-serie-carrosserieen\">BMW 1 series bodies<\/h2>\n\n<p>The 1 Series was initially available as a three- and five-door hatchback, but later a Coup\u00e9 and Cabrio version followed. The first generation remained in production until 2013, after which generation two took over. After a facelift in 2015, that model in turn made way for the third and current generation in 2019. Breaking tradition: the BMW 1 Series is now driven by the front wheels, although some versions are equipped with four-wheel drive.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bmw-1-serie-sedan\"><br\/>BMW <strong>1 Series sedan?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>For the second generation 1 Series, the Coup\u00e9 and Cabrio were discontinued again, the car was only available as a hatchback. That changed in 2017, when a sedan version was also available specifically for the Chinese market. This variant is very similar to the hatchback, but still has its own front and rear and is also built on BMW&#8217;s front-wheel drive platform.
