Why you want this new wonder paint from Nissan on your car

August 8, 2024

No more sweaty bottoms

We all know it: you get into your car on a hot summer day and it feels like you’ve entered a sauna.
Nissan has now found something to that with their “cool paint.
This is not paint that looks extra cool, but provides cooling thanks to a special white coating that reflects solar energy extremely well.

How it works.

The paint contains two types of tiny particles that react to light.
The first particle reflects the sun’s infrared rays that would normally heat the paint.
The second particle sends the sun’s energy away from the car, back into the air.
These two particles keep the car cooler because less heat is absorbed by the paint.
This helps lower the temperature of the car’s roof, hood, doors and side panels.

No thick blobs of paint

The special Nissan paint is thin and light.
Where other thermal paints are thick and heavy, this paint is sprayed onto the car in a layer of only 120 microns.
That’s thin enough not to weigh the car down, but thick enough to be effective.
In addition, a clear topcoat can be applied over it, protecting the paint from scratches and stone chips.

Electric car

For electric cars, the special paint is especially useful.
Because every drop of energy you save on air conditioning can be used to drive further. Nissan tested this paint for 12 months on their service vans at the Tokyo airport and the results are impressive: the Nissan NV100 vans stayed almost 10 degrees cooler inside than their normally painted counterparts.

The paint is an invention of Dr. Susumu Miura.
According to the brain behind this project, it’s all about the smart particles in the paint.
“My dream is to make cars cooler without using extra energy,” Miura said.

A small but

Of course, there is a catch.
The paint is not cheap.
And although it is thinner than other thermal coatings, it is still a bit heavier than standard automotive paint.
However, Nissan is busy testing different thicknesses and colors so that this technology could soon be available for every car.
In the video below, you can see how Nissan measures the temperature of two different cars: one with and one without the special paint.
