Why King Charles may surrender his driver’s license
Queen Elizabeth
Although Queen Elizabeth had several employees to drive her around, she could still often be found behind the wheel of a car. After all, she loved driving. From an early age. She even trained as a mechanic during World War II and was an ambulance driver during this period.

Land Rover was her favorite brand. The queen frequently drove a Defender on her private property, such as at her Balmoral estate in Scotland, where she died in September. But she wasn’t afraid to go out on public roads either. She was frequently spotted behind the wheel and often drove herself to major events. All this while she did not possess a driver’s license.

Her son and successor to the throne, King Charles III, now that he is king, also no longer needs a driver’s license. In fact, the throneholder in Britain does not have to have a driver’s license at all. In fact, British driver’s licenses are issued in the name of the king or queen. Therefore, they are allowed to be the only person in the country to drive a car without a license. Since a passport is also issued in the name of the country’s ruler, they don’t need that official document either. They may travel abroad without any form of identification.
