Volvo S90: substantial makeover for business sedan

April 17, 2025

Design Volvo S90: sleeker and Scandinavian

The new Volvo S90 has a sleek and streamlined exterior. The front and rear have been redesigned, with a new grille and Matrix LED headlights in the familiar “Thor’s Hammer” style. The taillights blend in nicely. The hood, front bumper and fenders have also been redesigned. Volvo offers two new metallic paint colors: Aurora Silver and Mulberry Red. New alloy wheels with contrasting textures should further enhance the car’s character.

Interior Volvo S90: more comfort and digital innovation

Inside, high-quality materials and improved sound insulation have been chosen. The S90 has standard adaptive suspension for extra driving comfort. On the technology front, Volvo introduces a new 11.2-inch freestanding infotainment screen. The accompanying user interface is faster and more intuitive than before. Thanks to over-the-air software updates, the system stays current.

Powertrains: plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid

The new S90 is available as a plug-in hybrid. According to the WLTP test cycle, this version can travel 80 kilometers fully electric. For many users, this means that daily commuting is possible without local emissions. On the other hand, some models from lower vehicle segments can already achieve well over 100 kilometers on a full charge of electricity. In the case of this S90, that’s 80 kilometers in theory. In practice, you should count on 60 kilometers. Volvo claims that almost half of the distances driven in recent plug-in hybrid models are fully electric.

There is also a mild-hybrid version with a four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine and front-wheel drive. This powertrain should perform efficiently and provide sufficient power. It is not yet known whether this powertrain will also come to Europe.

Safety: in the Volvo tradition

The S90 has a sturdy safety cage and advanced active safety systems. The driving assistance system Pilot Assist helps the driver on highways and county roads. The system automatically adjusts speed, brakes to a stop if necessary and supports lane keeping with slight steering corrections.

Important in Asia

According to Erik Severinson, Chief Product and Strategy Officer at Volvo Cars, the S90 remains an important model in Asian markets. Together with the new all-electric ES90, it complements Volvo’s sedan offerings. The S90 will not be coming to the Netherlands.
