Volkswagen ID.3 Neo unveiled: revamped EV hatchback not called ‘ID. Golf’

March 16, 2026

ID. Golf? No, ID.3 Neo

Rumors had been circulating for months that Volkswagen would rename the updated ID.3 to ID. Golf. That would have made sense: after all, the Golf is the most famous nameplate from Wolfsburg. Yet Volkswagen is taking a different tack. The brand chose to add “Neo,” a trick we know from Apple. Think of the MacBook Pro that also continues to be called simply MacBook Pro, but distinguished with a year designation or addition.

The choice is striking, but not illogical. The ID.3 has built up name recognition by now, and Volkswagen apparently does not want to throw it away. Moreover, the name “Golf” is probably being saved for a future model – after all, the ninth-generation Golf is still in development.

Design: evolution, not revolution

Volkswagen already shared some sketches of the ID.3 Neo and we have to be honest: it is not spectacularly different. The ID.3 Neo still looks recognizably like an ID.3, but with subtle refinements. The front end is particularly striking: it bears clear similarities to the ID. Polo, the more compact brother we know from the ID.2all concept.

At the rear, it is especially noticeable that the tailgate is now painted in body color instead of the distinctive black. This gives the car a more traditional, mature look. The shape of the taillights remains intact, but the overall impression looks neater and more premium.

Specifications: check out the Cupra Born

If you want to know what the ID.3 Neo has to offer, you really only need to look at the updated Cupra Born. It shares the same MEB platform AND was already unveiled last week. The entry-level version is expected to have 140 kW (190 hp) and a range of about 450 kilometers. Above that will come a 170 kW (231 hp) variant with a whopping 600 kilometers range – a big step up from the current ID.3.

For enthusiasts, another GTX variant with 240 kW (326 hp) is also likely to be expected. Yep, a sporty electric hatchback from Wolfsburg.

Interior: physical buttons at last

In the interior, Volkswagen is making a welcome correction. Physical buttons on the steering wheel are making their comeback, just as we already saw with the updated Cupra Born. So the infamous touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel – which no one was really a fan of – are finally being retired.

Furthermore, Volkswagen confirms the arrival of V2L functionality, which allows you to use the car as a power source for external devices. One Pedal Driving will also become standard, allowing you to drive and brake with just the accelerator pedal in many situations.

Prices

In terms of prices, nothing has been confirmed yet, but count on an entry price around 38,000 to 40,000 euros for the base version. Competition in the Netherlands is stiff: think the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the MG4 and, of course, the Cupra Born with which the ID.3 Neo shares the platform. Volkswagen’s advantage is its extensive dealer network and the brand’s familiarity with the general public.

Unveiling in April

The full unveiling of the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo is scheduled for April 2026. Very many surprises are not to be expected – thanks to the Cupra Born, we already know just about everything. But it will be interesting to hear final prices, Dutch configuration options and exact delivery dates. We’ll keep you posted, of course.
