Volkswagen Golf 8 2024: design

The updated Golf – also known as the Golf 8.5 – has been subtly modified. Still, there is a lot of news to report. This is mainly due to technical improvements, not so much to different design. A few things are new on the outside, including the sharper-lined front bumper, redesigned LED headlights and taillight units, a range of new colors and rims plus an illuminated Volkswagen logo in the front.

IQ.Light LED matrix headlights

Another highlight is the second, optional lighting package. This includes the latest version of the IQ.Light LED-Matrix headlights accompanied by the illuminated Volkswagen logo. The LED matrix headlights feature an enhanced high beam function with a range almost twice that of conventional high beam. The optional IQ.Light LED-Matrix light package also includes newly developed 3D LED taillight units, which can be personalized in the vehicle settings of the infotainment system. Here the driver can choose from three different lighting designs.

Versions Volkswagen Golf 8

Volkswagen is launching the new Golf in Golf, Life and the dynamic R-Line versions. Above these three lines are the extra sporty versions: the Golf GTE – equipped with a new plug-in hybrid powertrain – and the Golf GTI. New for the R-Line, GTE and GTI is a roof that features black paint. With the redesigned Golf, Volkswagen is also providing genuine carbon fiber interior accents for the GTI for the first time. Five new alloy wheels are available, ranging from 16 to 19 inches.

Easier parking

In addition, the Park Assist parking assistant has been further improved. In addition to steering, the system now accelerates and brakes independently. A requirement for using the system is that the driver be in the car to “monitor” the process. In addition, it is also optionally possible to perform the parking maneuver without the driver being in the car. Thereby, the parking function is controlled via an app on the smartphone. Also new is Area View: this system, which also comes in several other Volkswagen models, provides 360-degree all-round visibility via four cameras around the Golf.

New infotainment system!

Perhaps most importantly for drivers, Volkswagen has completely redeveloped the hardware and software of the Golf’s infotainment system. The systems are based on the fourth generation of Volkswagen’s Modular Infotainment Matrix (MIB4). Thanks to a new graphic and menu structure, the touch screen has been significantly improved and also simplified. The infotainment system can be operated without too much explanation and is 12.9 inches (32.8 cm) in size.

Tablet-style display

The new tablet-style MIB4 display is designed to be visually free-standing. As part of this, the air conditioning system’s touch-sliders and volume control are also newly developed. These are now more ergonomic to use and also illuminated. With this, the Golf models follow an operating concept that was also recently implemented in the new Passat Variant, Tiguan and ID.7. Also, the Golf again gets an optional head-up display that projects relevant information onto the windshield. On the steering wheel, physical buttons return by popular demand.

Volkswagen Golf eHybrid and Golf GTE

The updated Golf will be available with several powertrains: two plug-in hybrid versions (eHybrid and GTE), two mild-hybrid versions with 48V technology (eTSI) and four turbocharged gasoline engines (TSI). The Golf eHybrid’s new plug-in hybrid powertrain delivers a system output of 150 kW (204 hp). In the Golf GTE, system power is as much as 200 kW (272 hp). The new 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine (1.5 TSI evo2) features variable turbo geometry (VTG) and a new 19.7 kWh battery (net / predecessor: 10.6 kWh). With these improvements, Volkswagen expects that with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, the electric range is up to 100 kilometers (WLTP), depending on the chosen version.

Also, at a wallbox and other AC charging points, the battery can now be charged at 11 kW instead of 3.6 kW. In addition, the Golf eHybrid and Golf GTE can now also be charged at DC fast charging stations with a maximum output of 50 kW. The increased electric range and the possibility of fast charging make the plug-in hybrid Golf models a good alternative to fully electric cars for daily use, while at the same time excelling in efficiency thanks to a total range of about 1,000 kilometers (WLTP).

TSI and eTSI

The new eTSI (1.5 TSI evo2) with 48V technology and Active Cylinder Management (ACTplus), which are always mated to a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission, deliver 85 kW (115 hp) and 110 kW (150 hp) of power. The same turbocharged gasoline engine with a 48V system is also in the Golf 1.5 TSI models with manual transmission with the same power output. The 2.0 TSI engine in the iconic Golf GTI now delivers 195 kW (265 hp). As before, the Golf Variant is not offered as an eHybrid, GTE and GTI, but is available in all other versions.

Impressive figures

This year, Volkswagen is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Golf. Series production of the bestseller began in Wolfsburg in March 1974. Since then, Volkswagen has sold more than 37 million units of the Golf, spanning eight generations. In absolute numbers, it amounts to 2,000 people worldwide buying a new Golf every day for the past 50 years. This makes the icon the most successful European car and the best-selling Volkswagen model of all time.

Success number, that Volkswagen Golf

With about 37 million units produced, the Volkswagen Golf is not only the most successful car in Europe, it is also the best-selling Volkswagen and one of the three best-selling models since the car was invented overall. In the Netherlands, the Golf has been an outright sales hit since its introduction. A total of just under 900,000 copies were sold in our country. Even anno 2024, with 310,000 units, the Golf is still the most common car in the Dutch fleet, closely followed by the Volkswagen Polo, which occupies second place.
