The reason for the NS’ remarkable appeal is the train accident near Meteren, where a truck and a train collided Thursday. Five people suffered minor injuries and train traffic between Utrecht and Eindhoven was at a standstill for days. Footage shows how quickly things can go wrong: the truck got stuck between the barriers and then tried to carefully maneuver past them. Wrong, NS now says. In such a case, you just have to accelerate give. Rather a broken barrier than put yourself or the train driver in mortal danger.

“Step on the gas if you’re stuck”

ProRail and Transport en Logistiek Nederland (TLN) are deliberately sharing the images to wake up drivers – especially truck drivers. Their message is simple: drive on if you get stuck between the barriers. Those things are not there to stop you, but to break down when necessary. They are deliberately made of light material so you can drive through them without major damage.

Safety over damage

The warning applies especially to professional drivers: trucks, agricultural vehicles and buses. They should be extra vigilant at railroad crossings, where a small mistake can have huge consequences, as the video footage above shows. “Better damage to a barrier than a human life in danger. If you are stuck between the trees: drive on.” according to ProRail. The accident in Meteren is not the first this year. Earlier, a train near Halfweg collided with an ambulance that was on the track.
