The suspects claimed that a “wild bear” had entered their precious 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost and severely damaged the interior. To bolster their story, they even sent along a video showing the bear allegedly ravaging the car. The insurance company was not satisfied with the footage and became suspicious. They called in a specialized team from the California Department of Insurance to look into the matter.

Unusual behavior

Investigators from the insurance company quickly noticed that something was wrong. A biologist, who was consulted to assess the behavior of the “bear,” quickly concluded that this behavior was unusual for a bear.

More claims

During the investigation, other notable claims surfaced from the same individuals. Two other insurance claims, this time for damage to expensive Mercedes cars, told an identical story: a “bear” struck on the same day and location. The damage to these vehicles had already netted Americans $142,000 in insurance payments.

In the end, the whole story turned out to be a carefully staged play.
