Freezing rain

Cold huh? Fortunately, the mercury is shooting up today, so the smoothness the Netherlands faced yesterday is quickly disappearing. Due to rainfall and low temperatures, all of the Netherlands experienced black ice or freezing rain yesterday. The Department of Public Works spread an ounce (actually a bit more, 13 million pounds of salt!) – but the rain washed that away almost immediately.

Hundreds of accidents

The result was several hundred accidents. Some 500 incidents came in to the Department of Public Works control room, compared to the normal 10 to 15 on Sunday. According to a spokesman, many cars in particular slid onto the shoulder of the road and many rear-end collisions and single-vehicle accidents occurred. In some places, it was simply impossible for cars to stay on the road, so slippery was it.

Police

In a video from the website Regio15.nl, we see that some drivers were luckier. The video below shows an Opel and BMW sliding by a hair’s breadth past a stationary police car.
