Transformers in real life: Audi Activesphere Concept can transform from crossover into pickup truck

January 27, 2023

Audi Activesphere is fourth ‘Sphere’ model

The Audi Activesphere Concept is part of the brand’s so-called “Sphere” concept series. It is already the fourth and also the last concept model in this series. All of the sphere models embody Audi’s vision of tomorrow’s mobility: they are electrically powered, offer the space and comfort of a luxury lounge, can drive autonomously and their design is also forward-looking.

Transform!

Yet this Audi Activesphere Concept is extra special, as the model can transform. You read that right: the Audi Activesphere can transform from a crossover coupe into a pickup in seconds. A clever system allows the side windows and roof to slide in. In this “active back,” for example, e-bikes can be carried. The C-pillars remain in position. Ski racks are also integrated into the roof arch.

Premium Platform Electric: PPE

Like the other Sphere concept models, this Activesphere is on the modular Premium Platform Electric (PPE). Its modular design makes it suitable for models in various segments. Not only for the luxury D segment in which the Activesphere falls, but also for the popular B and C segments. Moreover, based on PPE, different body styles can be realized, such as SUVs and CUVs. In addition, the platform is suitable for models with a flat silhouette. For example, the dimensions and wheelbase of the current Audi A6 range match those of the Activesphere. The first Audi production model based on the PPE platform will still be presented in 2023. Audi developed the PPE platform together with Porsche.

Battery pack Audi Activesphere

In the case of this Audi Activesphere, we are talking about a battery pack with a capacity of about 100 kWh and separate electric motors for both axles. System power is 325 kW and maximum torque comes to 725 Nm. According to Audi, fully charged battery pack is good for a range of more than 600 kilometers.

Fast charging no problem

All future models on the PPE platform, like the Audi e-tron GT quattro, use 800V technology. Fast charging with an output of 270 kW is therefore possible. Ten minutes of charging results in 300 kilometers of additional driving range. The Activesphere’s 100 kWh battery pack can be charged from 5-80% in less than 25 minutes.

Activesphere Dimensions

The Audi Activesphere is 4.98 meters long, 2.07 meters wide and has a height of 1.60 meters. The wheelbase is 2.97 meters. hefty dimensions, in other words. The glass surfaces also stand out. Through the transparent grille, for example, occupants can see the area in front of the car through the “frunk. Even the arched tailgate is largely made of glass.

Air suspension

This particular Audi further has adaptive air suspension with adaptive dampers. Thanks to variable body height, the car can also do well off-road. Normally, the ground clearance is 20.8 cm. This can be increased by 4 cm for off-road use. On trips on the highway, for example, the body can actually be lowered by 4 cm for better streamlining. The car can also possibly drive autonomously. In autonomous driving, the pedals and steering wheel disappear.

Four times Sphere

In 2021, Audi dropped the

Skysphere Roadster Concept

seeing its first Sphere model. Thanks in part to its flexible wheelbase, this concept car can be driven as a luxury Grand Tourer or as an open sports car.

The

Audi Grandsphere Concept

debuted in September 2021. In this study model, the “first class” luxury of a private jet merges with a unique interior experience.

The

Audi Urbansphere Concept

presented in April 2022, was designed specifically for traffic in crowded Chinese metropolises, where personal space is scarce.

With this Audi Activesphere Concept, the “Sphere” story is complete. The electric-powered four-door crossover coupe based on the new PPE platform can be transformed into a pickup with plenty of space for passengers and their (sports) gear.
