Toyota AYGO X Hybrid: now 150 kilograms heavier (and more fuel-efficient)!

June 2, 2025

Toyota Aygo X Hybrid is first hybrid in A-segment?

But there were already hybrids in the A-segment, right? That’s what the marketing divisions would like you to believe, but a Fiat 500 Hybrid is not a hybrid at all. That is a mild-hybrid that cannot drive fully electric. The same goes for the Suzuki Swift Smart Hybrid. That, too, is a mild-hybrid. So this Toyota Aygo X Hybrid is a true hybrid.

Toyota Aygo X Hybrid

As the successor to the popular Aygo, the Aygo X was an instant hit upon introduction. More than 287,000 units have been sold across Europe since the car entered the market in 2022. This updated Toyota Aygo X takes another step forward, as it is the first true hybrid in the A-segment. The new powertrain – already available in the Yaris and Yaris Cross – completely replaces its predecessor’s 1.0-liter gasoline engine.

Space rearranged

To accommodate the hybrid powertrain in the Aygo X without modifying the wheelbase or luggage space, Toyota is applying a different layout. For the first time in a hybrid from the brand, two stacks of battery cells lie side by side lengthwise under the rear seat. In other Toyota hybrids, this is still done in parallel, requiring more space. The 12V battery is located under the luggage compartment, without affecting the amount of cargo space available.

The front of the car has also been modified. The front overhang is 76 millimeters longer. Toyota achieves this by repositioning the powertrain components without altering the model’s proportions.

Toyota Aygo X Hybrid: more power, fewer emissions

The system power of the hybrid Aygo X reaches 85 kW (116 hp), which is 32 kW (44 hp) more than the previous model. As a result, the car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than ten seconds. At the same time, fuel consumption remains low, with CO2 emissions at 86 grams per kilometer.

Platform and handling

The Aygo X Hybrid uses the GA-B platform of Toyota’s New Global Architecture. The hybrid battery is located low in the car, contributing to a low center of gravity. The combination of that platform and the battery placement creates a rigid body and agile handling. The turning radius is 9.4 meters, which simplifies maneuvering in tight spaces.

Noise in the interior reduced

The Aygo X gets extra sound insulation to keep things quieter inside. Sound dampening material behind the dashboard, an engine hood liner and a different floor plate help with this, as does a modified exhaust. In the higher-equipped versions, thicker glass and extra insulation in the body are added, further lowering noise levels.

Driver assistance systems

The car features Toyota Safety Sense, a package of safety systems. This includes an enhanced Pre-Collision System, Lane Trace Assist, Road Sign Assist, Emergency Driving Stop System and Proactive Driving Assist. The systems can now be updated over-the-air to keep them current. The package applies to all versions of the Aygo X.

Custom front

The front of the Toyota Aygo X Hybrid gets a new hood, modified headlights and a different grille. Together with black wheel arches and 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels, this changes the look. The hood closing line moves forward and the turn signals are now in the exterior mirror housing.

The car is available in a two-tone version, with the roof and rear being black. New exterior colors are available: Cinnamon, Jasmine Silver, Tarragon and Lavander. Those who want can opt for a cloth sunroof. In higher trims, this roof gets a patterned fabric.

Interior space and equipment

Inside, the driver’s seating position is raised for better all-round visibility. There is room for four people and the luggage compartment measures 231 liters. The interior gets a new, sleek look. A 7-inch digital instrument panel and a new heating control panel are part of the updated design. All versions get an electronic parking brake and two USB-C ports as standard. Higher versions add a wireless charger, digital key, power folding mirrors and nanoe X air purification.

GR SPORT version of Aygo X Hybrid

Toyota introduces a GR SPORT variant of the Aygo X. This version refers in naming and design to Toyota GAZOO Racing’s motorsports activities. The version combines a black hood with a two-tone exterior. Specific GR SPORT alloy wheels and a grille with a “G-pattern” mesh complete the look. Inside, gray and black accents are present and the GR logo is incorporated into the interior.

The suspension and shock absorbers have been modified for a sportier ride. The electric power steering has also been tuned differently, making the steering more direct. The tuning has been chosen to maintain driving comfort in urban areas.

Lower ecological impact

Toyota is focusing on reducing its environmental impact over the entire life of the car. The hybrid powertrain of the new Aygo X plays an important role in this. Toyota is also opting for new materials and trying to reduce emissions during production and transportation. According to the manufacturer, the carbon footprint drops by 18%* compared to the previous generation.

An example of another approach is the use of color technology in the injection molding process. This gives a part its color instantly, requiring less energy and materials than traditional painting methods.

New chair materials

Toyota uses new materials in the interior, including SakuraTouch®. This material consists of more than 40 percent PVC of plant origin, cork waste from the wine industry and recycled PET. SakuraTouch replaces animal leather and has similar wear resistance. CO2 emissions in the production of this material are 95% lower than leather.

Sustainable production

The Aygo X is produced in Kolin, Czech Republic. The plant is increasingly using renewable energy and trying to make the logistics of parts and vehicles more efficient to further reduce emissions.

Availability in the Netherlands

Toyota expects the new Aygo X to arrive in the Netherlands in early 2026. Final specifications and prices will be announced by the brand at a later date. The car will be built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech in Kolin.
