This is why you pay double for your car insurance in some provinces

February 27, 2025

South Holland vs. Friesland:

Comparison site Geld.nl has examined the prices of car insurance in the Netherlands. The price differences between provinces turned out to be quite large. In 2024, motorists in Friesland paid an average of 59.23 euros per month for their car insurance, while in South Holland the premium rose to 89.13 euros. That makes a difference of almost 30 peak months, or 360 euros on an annual basis.

The most expensive city in the Netherlands

The differences become even greater if you look at major cities. Rotterdam takes the crown as the most expensive city, with an average premium of 121.29 euros per euro month. By contrast, in Groningen, the cheapest of the ten largest cities, you pay only 71.17 euros. That makes a difference of 600 euros per year.

Traffic and crime

According to Paul Huibers, car insurance expert at Geld.nl, the high premiums in South Holland are mainly due to the damage risk. “In South Holland you find large cities such as The Hague and Rotterdam. Here there is more traffic and thus a greater risk of damage. Therefore, premiums in South Holland are on average higher than in provinces with more rural areas, such as Friesland and Groningens,” he explains. In addition, crime plays an important role. In 2023, as many as 1,460 cars were stolen in South Holland, almost a quarter of the national total.

Friesland, on the other hand, is a haven. With only 30 to 50 car thefts a year and less traffic chaos, premiums here remain low. “Partly because of this, Friesland has been the province with the lowest average car premium for the past three years,” Huibers said.

Premiums continue to rise

Geld.nl’s research also shows that car insurance in general is becoming increasingly expensive. In January 2023, Dutch people were still paying an average of 85.73 euros per month, but in July of the same year that amount had already risen to 93.73 euros.
