This is the only municipality in the Netherlands where Suzuki is most popular

BMW predominates in villa districts

Comparison site Independer has mapped the most popular car brands by municipality. In regions with a high average income, especially the well-known premium brands pop up. BMW is the undisputed number one in, among others, Blaricum, Bloemendaal and Laren. Audi is also doing extremely well in these parts of the country. BMW scores not only in affluent municipalities. The brand also proves popular in Rozendaal (Gelderland), Oegstgeest, Putten, Hulst, Sluis, Simpelveld, Sint-Michielsgestel, Heemstede and even on Texel.

Urk

Outside the Randstad, the priorities are different. In villages and smaller towns it is more often about reliability and low maintenance costs. Brands like Toyota and Suzuki are in demand there. In municipalities such as Urk, Hilvarenbeek and Montfoort, Toyota is the most popular car brand. A special outlier is Terschelling, where Suzuki leads the rankings – as the only municipality in the Netherlands.

Car Theft

Terschelling’s preference for an affordable brand has little to do with fear of car thieves. According to figures from the police and CBS, only one report of a car burglary was made on the entire island in 2024. That contrasts sharply with Bloemendaal, for example, which is in the top ten municipalities with the most car break-ins and thefts. There, 14.6 car burglaries per 1,000 households were reported last year, while the national average is 5.28.
