This Chinese brand already sold 1 million cars in Europe

February 19, 2026

MG was a British brand, wasn’t it?

MG is indeed an originally British car brand founded in 1924 as Morris Garages. The brand experienced many highs, but also lows that eventually became fatal to the brand. After the bankruptcy of MG Rover Group in 2005, the brand rights eventually came into the hands of China’s SAIC Motor, which revived the brand.

Under the MG brand name and with the same familiar logo, new models were built again starting in 2007. First on the basis of the old Rover 75. Later came new models developed and produced entirely in China. In 2011, MG finally returned to the British market with the MG 6. It became a success and several models followed.

2019 MG ZS EV

Introduction MG in the Netherlands

Finally, it took until 2019 for MG to decide to branch out into other European countries, with the Netherlands being the first. In October 2019 came the all-electric MG ZS EV – a surprisingly affordable family SUV with a “European look” that became an instant hit, helped by the 4% additional tax rate at the time.

Since then, things have only gone uphill for the brand. MG’s all-electric and hybrid models, sourced directly from China, have caught the eye of European buyers thanks to their design, modern technology and complete equipment combined with competitive prices.

Attractive offer

Thanks in part to its young and diverse range of hybrids, plug-in hybrids and all-electric models, MG recorded a new sales record in Europe in 2025. With more than 300,000 cars sold, MG not only sold 30% more than in 2024, but also surpassed some globally known brands that have been operating in Europe for decades.

Anno 2026, MG’s models are on sale in 34 European countries, so the brand has already sold 1 million cars in Europe since its return in 2011. The MG ZS (EV) is the best-selling MG in Europe, with over 400,000 units. The MG4 Electric is also doing very well, with over 300,000 of them already on European roads.
