This battery from LG stops a battery fire before it even starts
LG
Korean LG’s innovation revolves around a wafer-thin protective layer between the battery cells. Once the temperature rises too high, the structure of the material changes, greatly increasing electrical resistance. In other words, power is automatically cut off before the battery overheats. If the cell then cools down again, the layer recovers and the battery continues to work as normal.
Practice
During tests, the system proved surprisingly effective. Batteries without this technology caught fire in most cases when damaged, while batteries with the new coating did not catch fire or hardly caught fire at all – and any fires extinguished themselves.
Capacity
The big advantage: battery performance remains the same. Previous attempts to make this kind of “self-protecting” material often came at the expense of capacity or were simply too slow to respond. LG’s variant would not have that problem and is ready for large-scale testing.
