The new Renault 4 is making tongues wag: have at it!

October 14, 2024

About the Renault 4

The Renault 4 is a worldwide success story. A phenomenal sales success with 8,135,424 units sold over thirty years, in more than one hundred countries, on five continents. This makes the Renault 4 the best-selling Renault model ever worldwide. It has been produced in Europe (including Belgium and Spain), South America (including Argentina, Colombia and Peru), Africa (including Algeria, Morocco and South Africa) and even Oceania. In fact, the Renault 4 is the fourth best-selling car of all time.

Market launch Renault 4 E-Tech

Not surprisingly, the car has become an international cultural icon. Using the DNA of the original model, the Renault 4 E-Tech electric will build on its success. Renault will announce prices for the Renault 4 E-Tech electric in early 2025 before the car arrives at Renault dealerships next summer. But we can already tell more about the technical details of the car.

Position in lineup

The Renault 4 E-Tech electric is positioned just above the Renault 5 E-Tech electric in the B segment. It is slightly larger and more spacious than the Renault 5 E-Tech electric. In terms of positioning, these models relate to each other like the Renault Captur to the Renault Clio. The Renault 5 E-Tech electric focuses mainly on customers in urban environments; the Renault 4 E-Tech electric targets a wider audience and aims to help everyone, including young families, switch to electric mobility.

Dimensions Renault R4

At 4.14 meters, it is just slightly longer than the Renault Clio (+ 9 cm) and slightly shorter than the Renault Captur (- 9 cm). The wheelbase is 2.62 meters, for more interior space. Width is 1.80 meters and height comes to 1.57 meters, similar to the Captur. But ground clearance is 18.1 cm – 1.2 cm more than the Captur. Renault equips all versions of the Renault 4 E-Tech electric with 18-inch wheels, which enhance its adventurous character.

Luggage space

Luggage space is 420 liters, the luggage compartment threshold is low and there are smart storage compartments, a fold-down rear seat and a passenger seat that folds flat – a first for an electric Renault!

ADAS

Renault further equips the 4 E-Tech electric with comfort and safety technology, such as Active Driver Assist for level 2 autonomous driving, no fewer than 26 driver assistance systems and My Safety Switch. This popular feature in new Renault models allows drivers to activate their preferred settings for five ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) at the touch of a button. For added safety, the new dynamic braking system combines braking with ESP in one module, cutting reaction time in half. Other features include Fireman Access and warning systems such as the Occupant Safe Exit Alert, Safety Score and Safety Coach, which are already available in the Renault 5 E-Tech electric and the Renault Scenic E-Tech electric.

OpenR link multimedia system with Google

The Renault 4 E-Tech electric also offers the openR link multimedia system with Google and the Reno avatar: Renault’s new virtual assistant. Reno works with the ChatGPT AI chatbot and completes the Renault 4 E-Tech electric’s technological offering. The avatar helps occupants easily understand electric functions, even for those who are less tech-savvy.

Charging technology

Finally, the Renault 4 E-Tech electric is equipped with a new 11 kW AC (alternating current) bi-directional charger suitable for V2L (vehicle-to-load) and V2G (vehicle-to-grid) technology. This allows the car to be used as an energy source. Various services are also available for everyday electric car use: smart charging with Mobilize Smart Charge, access to more than 800,000 charging stations in 25 European countries with the Mobilize Charge Pass and automatic charging without a badge or credit card with the Plug & Charge feature.

Versions

The entry-level evolution version features aerodynamically optimized wheel covers called ‘Jogging’. The techno version features four-spoke, black diamond-cut alloy wheels called ‘Sixties’ in reference to the original model. The iconic version is also equipped with black diamond-cut alloy wheels called ‘Parisienne’.

The names Jogging, Sixties and Parisienne were carefully chosen. Each of these names refers to a special version of the original Renault 4: the 1981 Jogging, the 1985 Sixties, and the 1963 Parisienne – a collaboration with the women’s magazine ELLE.

Retro look

With its retro-futuristic design, the contemporary Renault 4 E-Tech electric has some iconic elements of the original Renault 4 reinvented by the manufacturer. The 1.45-meter-wide grille is made of a single piece and includes the round headlights. The continuous frame is reminiscent of the original model’s chrome trim.

Colors Renault 4 E-Tech

The Renault 4 E-Tech electric is available in seven stylish, elegant colors: Blanc Glacier, Gris Urbain, Noir Étoilé, Rouge Carmin, Brun Terracotta, Vert Hauts-de-France and Bleu Nuage. At launch, the Renault 4 E-Tech electric comes in the new color Vert Hauts-de-France. Although this hue is reminiscent of the 1961 Bleu Île-de-France, it is now a pearlescent color, changing from blue to green depending on the light. The name refers to the production site in Maubeuge, in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France.

AmpR Small-platform

The Renault 4 E-Tech electric is the second model in Renault’s range built on the AmpR Small platform – the Ampere platform specifically for B-segment electric cars. The Renault 5 E-Tech electric and the Renault 4 E-Tech electric share 68% of their components. As a result, Renault achieves significant economies of scale without compromising on the cars’ qualities – a convincing feat of industrial and technical expertise.

Despite its ground clearance of 18.1 cm, the loading threshold of the Renault 4 E-Tech electric is particularly low: 61 centimeters. Thus, it takes a cue from the original Renault 4. But the tailgate has to be open to see it, as it extends into the bumper. When part of the bumper rises with the tailgate, it always gives a surprise effect. This construction requires specific metal parts. The cross support has been lowered and is now hidden behind the bumper, while the side supports retain their original position.

Engine variants Renault 4

The Renault 4 E-Tech electric comes in 40 and 52 kWh versions. The electric motor comes with 90 or 110 kW. The Renault 4 E-Tech electric with 52 kWh battery and 110 kW electric motor has a range according to WLTP of up to 400 kilometers. The lithium-ion battery incorporates NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) technology for the highest energy density on the market. The battery is composed of four large modules in a single housing, saving 20 kg in weight compared to the Renault ZOE. As a result, the battery in the Renault 4 E-Tech electric weighs less than 300 kg.

The electric motor in the Renault 4 e-Tech electric is based on the one in the Megane E-Tech electric and the Scenic E-Tech electric. With 110 kW (150 hp) of power and 245 Nm of torque, the motor is similar to the one in the Renault 5 E-Tech electric. The Renault 4 E-Tech electric accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and from 80 to 120 km/h in less than 7 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited at 150 km/h.

Renault equips all versions of the Renault 4 E-Tech electric with an 11 kW AC bi-directional charger, giving the car extra freedom to drive in any European city. The version with 110 kW power and 52 kWh battery has a 100 kW DC charger for connection to fast charging points, especially along highways. Charging times are as follows:

90 kW (120 hp)

The Renault 4 E-Tech Electric also comes with an electric motor with 90 kW (120 hp) and 225 Nm combined with a 40 kWh battery. Renault supplies this version with an 80 kW DC on-board charger. The range comes out to more than 300 kilometers on paper and charging times are as follows:

Bidirectional V2G function

The two-way V2G feature must be linked to a specific electricity contract with Mobilize. The contract is based on a technology partnership between Mobilize and The Mobility House and offers the guarantee of green energy. The user has the opportunity to monetize the energy he delivers back to the grid through the automated management of bi-directional charging. The contract guarantees that the user is supplied with energy at a rate competitive with the reference market price, and that the customer can sell the electricity.

Manufacturing

Renault Group is having the Renault 4 E-Tech electric produced in Europe at Ampere ElectriCity. Assembly of the car will take place in Maubeuge. The electric motor will be built at the plant in Cléon and the battery will be produced in Douai from March 2025. As many as 75% of suppliers are within a 300-kilometer radius of ElectriCity.
