That’s how these drivers got their car insurance down to 10 euros a month
A premium under ten euros? It can
Geld.nl surveyed tens of thousands of car insurance applications this year and stumbled upon a striking group: twelve motorists who spend less than a tenner a month on their policy. By comparison, the average premium comes to 88.95 euros per month, according to the July 2025 Car Insurance Datamonitor.
The success formula for the lowest premium
How do you get an amount like that? It’s all about the perfect combination of factors that insurers look at. The cheapest insured in the study drives a small car more than thirty years old, does not cover more than 7,500 kilometers annually and chose the minimum third-party coverage. The driver himself is seventy years old, lives in Gelderland and has no fewer than forty claim-free years on the counter.
Old, open and cheap
Striking detail: many of the extremely low premiums go to convertibles. Especially the Mazda MX-5 passes by remarkably often. This is easily explained: a convertible often functions as a second car, intended for sunny drives. As a result, few kilometers are driven, which is beneficial for the premium.
By the way, the average age of drivers with this type of spotty insurance is 67, with an average of 28 claim-free years. Even the cars themselves are usually more than 20 years old.
What does this mean for the rest?
Not everyone is eager to drive around in an old convertible, but fortunately there are other ways to get your premium down. For example, those who have been with the same insurer for more than a year would do well to compare again. Cars get older, premiums change and competition between insurers is fierce. So switching can easily save you dozens of euros per month.
