Suzuki back in 400cc segment
The Suzuki DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM are two different models featuring a torquey 398cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with fuel injection. Both engines feature Suzuki’s Ride-by-Wire electronic throttle control and a comprehensive package of electronic assistance systems.
Suzuki DR-Z4 models: the differences
The DR-Z4S Dual Sport, with its higher seating position, longer build, 21-inch front wheel and low weight, is aimed at dirt roads, but is also suitable for public roads. The DR-Z4SM Supermoto’s shorter build, more forward seating position and 17-inch wheels make it primarily intended for a supermotard circuit, winding roads and the city.
Spicy single cylinder with dual spark plugs
The compact, liquid-cooled 398cc DOHC engine with dry-sump lubrication system offers a fine and controllable linear throttle response and also fully complies with the Euro 5+ emissions standard. This is due in part to the use of dual spark plugs. Of course, Suzuki’s electronic Ride-by-Wire throttle control and electronic fuel injection also play an important role here. The engine produces 37 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. Peak power is 28 kW (38 hp) at 8,000 rpm.
Electronic driving aids
Both models have the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.) That includes the Suzuki Drive Mode Selector with three driving modes. And electronic traction control is part of it, with a Gravel mode for off-road driving. Traction control can also be turned off completely. On the DR-Z4S, front and rear ABS can also be completely disabled. It is Suzuki’s first production model where this is possible. It is also possible to disable only the ABS of the rear brake.
Light weight
Both models feature a completely newly developed twin-spar steel tube frame with a lightweight aluminum rear subframe. The roadworthy weight of the DR-Z4S is only 151 kg and the seat height is 920 mm. The DR-Z4SM weighs 154 kg roadworthy and has a seat height of 890 mm.
Different wheel sizes
The DR-Z4S has a 21-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel with IRC GP-410 tires. Optimized for both off-road and on-road riding, these tires feature large center lugs that ensure a firm grip. The DR-Z4SM is equipped with 17-inch rims front and rear with Dunlop SPORTMAX Q5A street tires.
Long suspension paths
Both models feature an upside-down front fork from KYB but with different suspension travel. For the DR-Z4S the suspension travel measures a generous 280 mm and at the rear the monoshock offers 296 mm. Ground clearance is a whopping 300 mm. For the DR-Z4SM, ground clearance is 260 mm and front suspension travel covers 260 mm, rear 277 mm. Both the front and rear suspension offer the ability to adjust compression and rebound damping.
