Spotted: a Volkswagen ID.6 Crozz

January 17, 2025

The Volkswagen ID family began in 2019 with the introduction of the Volkswagen ID.3. Since then, it has grown into a complete ID model line, covering the main market segments. From the ID.3 as a hatchback to SUV models and the ID.Buzz as a van/MPV. The ID family is primarily intended for Europe, but some models do ship outside of that. In China, for example, which, like Europe, is also strongly committed to electrification. But did you know that there are even ID models developed specifically for the Chinese market that are not even for sale here?

The Volkswagen ID.6

The Volkswagen ID.6 is one such model. Introduced in 2021, the ID.6 is a six- or seven-passenger SUV in the (upper) middle class. The car is built on the MEB platform, which is also familiar to us, and is technically closely related to the Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5. The ID.6 is positioned – the number already indicates it – above these models as a somewhat roomier alternative. The ID.6 is more than 20 centimeters longer than the ID.4 and ID.5. That extra length is mainly in the longer wheelbase.

Two versions of the Volkswagen ID.6

The Volkswagen ID.6 is available in two versions: the Crozz and the X. It is worth noting that Volkswagen operates in China through two joint ventures: FAW-Volkswagen and SAIC-Volkswagen. FAW-Volkswagen supplies the X variant of the ID.6, SAIC-Volkswagen the Crozz. Both variants have slightly different looks (even the dashboards are slightly different), but are otherwise identical to each other. Below you can see the Crozz and the X side by side.

Drivetrain Volkswagen ID.6

As standard, the Volkswagen ID.6 has a 132 kW (180 hp) strong powertrain, with a 150 kW (204 hp) variant as an option. There is also a dual-motor version and then you have 225 kW (306 hp). With a 0-100 time of 6.6 seconds versus just over 9.0 seconds for the other models, the most powerful version is obviously also the fastest. Remarkably, then, the power variants – except for the 150 kW version – are different from the technically related ID.4 and ID.5.

These engines can be combined with either a 45 or 77 kWh battery pack. The former is slightly smaller than the one in our ID.4 and ID.5, but we also know the 77 kWh package. In the Volkswagen ID.6, these battery packs are good for a range of 436 to 588 km, but that is still measured according to the old NEDC cycle. That was allowed to be applied in China for much longer than in our country.

The spotted specimen

The Volkswagen ID.6 comes only to the Chinese market. Our surprise was therefore great when we suddenly saw an ID.6 Crozz driving past our editorial office. We were just able to quickly take these pictures. Yes, we’ve published better photos before, but as mentioned, we thought this spot was too special not to show.

It is, in fact, a unique spot in the Netherlands. According to the license plate register, this is the only Volkswagen ID.6 on Dutch license plates. In that case, we know that this example has been in the Netherlands since 2022 and was imported brand new at that time. We wonder what the motivations were for this import, because gray import from China is quite a hassle. Apparently someone went to all that trouble for an ID model that is just a bit bigger than the ID.4 and ID.5. At least you drive something special and that makes the street scene just a little more interesting.
