‘Small’ BMW GS on the way

November 11, 2024

The BMW Concept F 450 GS is a preview of what could be a future BMW GS for A2 license holders. It could go into production in 2025, according to BMW. That’s when the 450 GS will nestle between the BMW G 310 GS and the F 800 GS / F 900 GS models. “Riding fun on and off road is a top priority for this A2 BMW GS,” says Sepp Mächler, Product Manager.

Design BMW F 450 GS

“The BMW Concept F 450 GS carries the characteristic DNA of the GS family,” says Alexander Buckan, head of design at BMW Motorrad. As with the Trophy version of the BMW R 1300 GS, this concept version comes in blue, white and red with the base color Racing Blue metallic.

Two-cylinder engine

In the frame hangs a completely newly developed two-cylinder parallel twin. It produces 35 kW (48 hp), which, logically, is also the maximum power you can have under your ass with an A2 license. The engine is very compact and contributes to the low weight of the BMW F 450 GS. Many lightweight materials have been chosen, such as magnesium. According to BMW, the weight comes in under 175 kg.

Focus on offroad

The F 450 GS has a fully adjustable up-side-down front fork and a rear shock with load-dependent damping, based on technology from rally and enduro racing. Furthermore, there is the necessary electronic rider assistance, such as BMW Motorrad ABS Pro (depending on gradient) to freely configurable riding modes. With BMW Motorrad Connectivity on board and the 6.5-inch TFT screen, linking the motorcycle and smartphone and other accessories is made possible.

Production version BMW F 450 GS

How close is the BMW Concept F 450 GS to the production version? Johann Simon, vehicle project manager of the Concept F 450 GS, explains: “Following the very sporty off-road focus of the Concept F 450 GS, we will keep the production version as close to this concept as possible. We are only adjusting the seat height for better accessibility and easier handling. As an alternative to the cross-spoke wheels (19-inch front, 17-inch rear), light but very strong cast aluminum wheels in the same dimensions are also conceivable.”

BMW Motorrad plans to present the corresponding series model in the style of the Concept F 450 GS in 2025.
