Second M model from BMW Motorrad
M brand strategy for motorcycles
In late 2018, BMW Motorrad introduced the M brand strategy famed from BMW cars to motorcycles, initially in the form of special M equipment and M Performance Parts and then with a dedicated M model: the M 1000 RR. The M 1000 R is now experiencing its world premiere as BMW Motorrad’s second M model: the M Roadster. The Dutch starting price of the BMW M 1000 R is €25,500, and the bike will be available in the Netherlands from early 2023.
45 hp more than BMW S 1000 R
The liquid-cooled 4-cylinder in-line engine is based on that of the BMW S 1000 RR. The powerplant delivers a maximum output of 154 kW (210 hp) at 13,750 rpm, 33 kW (45 hp) more than in the S 1000 R. Maximum torque is 113 Nm at 11,000 rpm (S 1000 R: 114 Nm at 9,250 rpm). Compared to the S 1000 R, the M R offers a higher maximum rpm of 14,600 rpm. Due to a larger front sprocket with 47 teeth (S 1000 R: 45 teeth), the final transmission is shorter. In addition, the gear ratios of the 4th, 5th and 6th gears are also shorter. It results in more powerful throttle response and brighter acceleration.
Air resistance reduced
Aerodynamics played an important role in developing the M R. The M winglets on the front side panels ensure the best possible driving stability at high speed. Even at 160 km/h the effect is noticeable. Front wheel downforce actually increases by 11 kg at 220 km/h.
Adjustable suspension and damping
The M R features adjustable suspension and damping, a steering damper, a milled handlebar clamp, wide tubular handlebars with laser-engraved ‘BMW M 1000 R’ lettering and mirrors on the handlebar ends. The aluminum bridge frame of the S 1000 R was the starting point for the M R. The M R further features an all-black upside-down front fork with 45 mm diameter suspension legs, equipped with so-called closed cartridges with separate hydraulic damping functions. Another new feature of the M R is the individually adjustable spring rate of the front fork via the standard Dynamic Damper Control (DDC).
Experience of World Superbike Championship
After the M 1000 RR, the M R is the second BMW motorcycle with an M braking system. It incorporates the experience gained from BMW Motorrad’s factory racers in the World Superbike Championship. The M calipers stand out with a blue coating and the famous M logo. With two 320 mm diameter and 5 mm thick brake discs at the front, black anodized aluminum brake disc carriers and a radial brake pump, this braking system is leading the way for street-legal motorcycles. The new M R comes standard with very light wheels made of forged aluminum. The optional M Competition Package offers even lighter M Carbon wheels with specially designed rim tapes.
Controlled brake drifts
The new Brake Slide Assist allows you to allow controlled brake drifts during cornering. As you sometimes see with drivers on the track. There are more circuit-worthy elements such as the layout of the instrumentation. With the M R, this shows similarities to that of the M RR, such as an M start animation on contact. The enlarged display of the red zone during the warm-up phase in the tachometer is a new feature. Optional driving and engine data can be used via the M GPS Laptrigger and the M GPS Datalogger.
M Performance for a little extra
The performance-oriented look of the new M R is also reflected in the color schemes. You can choose Lightwhite non-metallic/M Motorsport color scheme with the base variant of the M R, while the Blackstorm metallic/M Motorsport color scheme is part of the M Competition Package. The M Competition Package offers a fascinating mix of refined components for racing technology enthusiasts and for more aesthetics-oriented riders. The package also includes M Carbon wheels, M footpegs and numerous carbon made parts such as rear fender and front fender, chain guard, tank panels, airbox panel, wind deflector and sprocket cover. An M rear buddyseat cover panel and milled M passenger footrests are also part of the Package.
