Review – Porsche Macan Turbo Electric (2024), hit or miss?

December 11, 2024

Nimbleness and sportiness

The Porsche Macan is known for its nimbleness and sportiness. In fact, in terms of driving dynamics, the combustion engine variant is one of the finer cars in its segment. But now the Macan is fully electric. As a result, this Macan Turbo weighs a sloppy 2,405 kilograms. Bye bye nimbleness? You would think so, but nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, Porsche employs wizards who can mask that weight perfectly. This Porsche Macan Turbo Electric is proof.

Steering rear wheels

Sensationally, this Porsche Macan is not heavy at all. It steers directly, with a lot of feeling, and is razor-sharp on the road. Co-steering rear wheels help to enhance that feeling. The rear axle steering is also extra helpful in the city or in parking garages. Well, the first point is already in: driving the Porsche Macan is, in a way, a revelation. It is genuinely a wonderful car to be on the road in.

PASM for Porsche Macan Turbo Electric

Here we would like to highlight two more systems. The first feature is adaptive air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). This system offers comfortable or just sporty damping. Especially nice is Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, which features an electronically controlled, fully variable rear axle differential. By specifically braking the rear wheel on the inside of the corner, the vehicle can be steered even more agile in tight, fast turns. And you feel that.

Driving assistance systems in Porsche Macan Turbo Electric

Also nice: the driving assistance systems stay nicely in the background. The warning tones can be heard subtly in the interior. Fortunately, everything can also be turned off quickly, such as the speed alert and lane-keep assist. The latter two systems affect your driving pleasure so much that we turn them off immediately after starting the car.

Roomy is the Macan, too. This is due in part to the longer wheelbase of 2,893 mm. This also makes it excellent for sitting in the back, even though the entry to the rear is a bit tight. Not bad, though. Once you are seated, it is fine. In the front, you are completely comfortable. The seat can be lowered and the adjustability of the steering column is also good.

Fine infotainment

But we are even more impressed with the interface of the infotainment system and digital instrumentation. Razor-sharp graphics! Also, you easily cycle through all the menus of the infotainment system, which is somewhat different in other brands. The passenger is also in luck, as he/she also has their own display with access to infotainment, such as a karaoke app. Cozy though those services are mainly for when you’re charging. On the road, staring at a display in a moving car often results in some form of nausea anyway, we hear from co-drivers.

Active interior lighting

What is especially striking about the new Porsche Macan is how well Porsche has thought about the small details. Like a frunk that opens instantly at the push of a button, without you having to touch a lever yourself. Or the active interior lighting that also warns of traffic in the blind spot. Or the ability to charge the car both right and left, even though one side is only suitable for DC charging.

Loading speeds up to 270 kW

Speaking of that charging: like the Taycan, the electric Macan benefits from 800V technology. In theory, that should allow you to achieve charging speeds of up to 270 kW at a fast charger. That doesn’t mean you’re going to achieve that every charging session. It depends on several factors, such as the temperature of your battery. In one charging session at Fastned – with an outside temperature of about 4 degrees – we started charging at a battery percentage of 34 percent. In half an hour, 50 kWh had gone into the battery. Average charging speeds of 120 kW were achieved. That’s still acceptable, especially if you’re not in a hurry. And we weren’t.

Range in practice

You’re not going to get the WLTP range of up to 590 kilometers in winter. We drove the Macan in winter conditions, with an outside temperature of about 4 degrees. The trip computer gave about 400 kilometers of driving range. Average energy consumption stuck at 23 kWh, even when cruising leisurely at 105 km/h. On paper, 18.9 to 20.7 kWh should be possible per 100 kilometers. Especially in summer, count on values close to those figures. In winter, this electric Macan – like many other EVs – is simply of “thirstier.

Porsche Macan Turbo Electric proves to be practical high-performance EV

Even the luggage space is well done. So a practical high-performance EV, where every facet has been well thought out. That makes the new Porsche Macan one of the nicest electric cars you can drive every day, regardless of your mood. Sporty, comfortable or something in between, it’s all possible. And those looks? Well, you can decide for yourself if you like it. Photos don’t do the model justice. You have to see and feel it in real life. The thick A-pillar is annoying. The rear view is also limited, due to the narrow rearview and small interior mirror. But you can live with those drawbacks.

One of the nicest electric SUVs

So is the new Porsche Macan a miss? Anything but! In fact, Porsche has produced one of the nicest electric SUVs ever. Granted, there are some snags – such as the thick A-pillars – but otherwise this car is an absolute hit with, for Porsche, a very acceptable price tag, especially considering its performance. Because did we mention that this Macan Turbo boasts a whopping 1,130 Nm of torque? Yes, you read that right! The 0-100 time is just 3.3 seconds. Those are supercar figures.

The Porsche Macan Turbo has a starting price of 121,000 euros. With some options, that price easily rises. Is a Macan Turbo a little too much of a good thing? There is also a Macan Electric with 360 hp and a 0-100 time of 5.7 seconds. That version comes from 85,300 euros.
