Secretly quite successful, that Citroën C4

Introduced in 2020, the Citroën C4 was the number two model in the mainstream C-segment in Europe in the first half of 2024. In the all-electric C-segment, the ë-C4 was in the top five best-selling models. Introduced in 2023, the Citroën C4 X began its advance strongly in the Middle East, after which the fastback variant also won more and more customers in Europe.

What exactly is new?

First of all, the design. The models have received a new front and the rear of both models has also been significantly modified. Citroën is further installing new Advanced Comfort seats to complement the Advanced Comfort suspension. The interior has been further taken to the next level with a new 7-inch digital instrument panel behind the steering wheel and a new infotainment system. There is also a color head-up display that shows essential information. The steering wheel, of course, features the new Citroën logo.

Infotainment system

The C4 and C4 X are equipped with a latest-generation infotainment system. The system offers an intuitive interface that can be customized via the central display screen with widgets, allowing quick access to apps and other content. Integrated 3D navigation is optional from the Plus trim and standard for the Max trim. The infotainment system also offers voice recognition and a digital assistant that can be activated with the command “Hello Citroën.” This system understands spoken commands, answers questions and carries out commands.  

‘Over the air’ updates

In addition, smartphones can be wirelessly synchronized with the infotainment system and the software is always updated thanks to “over the air” updates. Those who opt for the Connect Plus package can also count on integrated ChatGPT. With this, Citroën introduces a new form of artificial intelligence that makes speech recognition even more fluid and natural.

New wheels and protective parts

Also new are the 18-inch Amber wheels. Furthermore, the car also has refreshed protective parts with Color Clips. The C4’s two taillight units are connected by a black panel on which the Citroën brand name is also written out. The rear of the C4 X is less radically redesigned. The trunk lid has the new brand logo and newly designed LED taillights.

Two new body colors

The updated Citroën C4 and C4 X are available in two new body colors: Manhattan Green and Mercury Grey. These colors are added to the existing color palette that includes Eclipse Blue, Elixir Red and Perla Nera Black. A two-tone body with a black roof is still optional.

Advanced Comfort seats

Citroën’s Advanced Comfort seats have been redesigned to improve on-board comfort in the C4 and C4 X. These seats have 15 mm thicker foam. Comfort has also been optimized with the addition of textured foam and a high-density layer in the center of the seat. This provides a more pleasant seating feel when traveling long distances.  

Advanced Comfort Suspension

The car also has Advanced Comfort suspension. This technology uses Progressive Hydraulic Cushions that absorb uneven road surfaces to create the feeling of a “flying carpet.

Luggage space Citroën C4

The Citroën C4 has a luggage compartment with a capacity of 380 liters. The load floor is adjustable to two heights, while the luggage compartment is expandable to a capacity of 1,250 liters with the rear seats folded down. Side hooks in the luggage compartment are designed for hanging bags and the ski hatch makes it possible to transport long items. The new Citroën C4 X has 510 liters of luggage space.

Powertrains 

Citroën delivers the C4 and C4 X with a choice of two all-electric powertrains (ë-C4 and ë-C4 X). Both models are available with a 50 kWh battery coupled to a 100 kW (136 hp) electric motor. This battery provides enough energy for a range of up to 342 km (ë-C4) or 352 km (ë-C4 X).  There is also a version that pairs a 54 kWh battery with a 115 kW (156 hp) electric motor. This version guarantees a range of up to 418 km (C4) or 427 km (C4 X).

The new Citroën ë-C4 and ë-C4 X are both capable of fast charging with power up to 100 kW. This allows the battery to be charged to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes, equivalent to about 10 km of range per minute.

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L)

The Citroën ë-C4 and ë-C4 X become available with V2L, or Vehicle-to-Load. This technology enables an electric car to deliver electricity to external devices, transforming the car into a mobile power source. V2L is particularly useful in situations where access to a power source is limited, such as during travel or outdoor activities. For example, you can plug in your laptop, charge an electric bike or even plug in a small refrigerator during a picnic or a power outage at home.  

To use V2L, simply plug the desired device into the vehicle’s dedicated power outlet. This optional functionality can be ordered directly. An adapter must be ordered via accessories. This will be available from March 2025.

48V hybrid technology

In addition to being available as an all-electric variant, the new Citroën C4 and C4 X are also available with hybrid technology. The C4 comes with a choice of Hybrid 100 ë-DCS6 and Hybrid 136 ë-DCS6 powertrains. The C4 X comes only as a Hybrid 136 ë-DCS6.

The Hybrid 136 ë-DCS6 is powered by a 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine developed specifically for hybrid propulsion and composed of 40% new components. The internal combustion engine uses a variable geometry turbocharger and a timing chain, improving both engine performance and reliability. Also, the gasoline engine operates according to the Miller cycle, providing optimized thermal efficiency and lower CO2 emissions.  

The gasoline engine produces 100 kW (136 hp) and 230 Nm of torque and is supported by a compact electric motor with 21 kW (28 hp) and 55 Nm.

Support

The support is especially evident when pulling away from a standstill and at low speeds. This 48V electric motor also acts as a starter to bring the gasoline engine to life at lightning speed as well as a generator to charge a compact battery during braking and coasting. Energy is stored in a compact lithium-ion battery (432 Wh) under the driver’s seat.

The Hybrid 100 ë-DCS6 works on the same principle. However, in this case the gasoline engine produces 100 hp (74 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 205 Nm of torque at 1,750 rpm. For both hybrid engines, they are mated to an electrified ë-DCS6 dual-clutch transmission as standard.
