Review – BYD ATTO 2, truly all-inclusive or snag?
Other target group
In terms of car concept, the new BYD ATTO 2 closely approximates the existing Dolphin, both in terms of size and price. Both models just target a different audience. The ATTO 2 is also priced slightly lower, with a smaller battery pack admittedly. Competitors of the ATTO 2 are the Suzuki eVitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Hyundai Kona Electric, Opel Frontera and Citroën C3 Aircross. And don’t rule out other Stellantis-branded models either.
Michael Shu and Penny Peng
Michael Shu, Managing Director BYD Europe, says: The B-segment is incredibly important because it is a mega-market. But the range of B-EVs is still quite limited. With the ATTO 2, we can take the next step in Europe.” Penny Peng, Marketing & PR Director BYD Europe, adds: “BYD is growing like crazy, which is also because we develop components in such a way that we are applicable to different models. That already starts with our Blade Battery, invented in 2020. But also the e-Platform 3.0 and Cell to Body technology are bearing fruit.”

BYD takes a slightly different approach
BYD does not advertise with a very low recommended retail price. Other manufacturers take a different approach. The Hyundai Inster, for example, comes starting at 24,000 euros and a Renault 5 E-Tech costs at least 25 grand. But to “flavor” those models, you often have to upgrade to a higher equipment level and tick off a few more options. BYD – Build Your Dreams – is taking its own course in that area. The brand chooses to market a car at a competitive price, where upgrading is not really necessary. This BYD ATTO 2 is no exception. Before we dive into all the equipment, let’s take a look at the car itself.
Dimensions BYD ATTO 2
The BYD ATTO 2 offers a higher seating position, something many people warm to. Furthermore, the car has a length of 4.321 meters, a width of 1.83 meters and a height of 1.68 meters. The wheelbase is remarkably large at 2.62. The boot of the BYD ATTO 2 has a capacity of 400 liters. By folding down the 40/60 rear seat in its entirety, that grows to 1,340 liters. In addition to the flat floor of the passenger compartment, the luggage compartment is also completely flat when the rear seats are folded down.

Design ATTO 2
The design can safely be described as no nonsense, but nice features have been added here and there, such as the “floating” roof combined with the characteristic C-pillar, as well as the decorative elements in the sills. At the rear, the light strip extends across the entire width of the car. Fun to tell on a birthday: the LED light technology here is executed in the pattern of a Chinese knot (Mobius Infiniti Ring or numeral 8), which stands for infinite happiness.
Interior
In the interior, no “gym” vibes as in the larger ATTO 3, but a more mainstream design. However, high-quality and generally soft materials do stand out. Interestingly, a glass panoramic roof with electrically operated sunshade is standard. The same goes for electrically adjustable front seats. You don’t see that often. The interior comes in black or white.
Rotatable infotainment display
What else stands out in the interior? At least the presence of physical buttons to quickly operate some functions. All versions of the ATTO 2 are also equipped with a digital instrument panel (8.8 inches). Depending on the chosen version, the rotating, central infotainment display has a diameter of 10.1 or 12.8 inches. Apps such as Spotify, YouTube, Zoom and Amazon Music are integrated in all versions. Going to the dealer for updates? No need to. The Atto 2 supports Over The Air updates. Of course, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also available (wirelessly).
Cell phones and other devices can be charged via front and rear USB ports (rear with USB A and USB C). In the slightly more expensive Boost version, phones can also be charged wirelessly. The ATTO 2’s infotainment system is above average. You have a voice assistant, but the system is also completely customizable. By moving three fingers from top to bottom across the screen, for example, you easily adjust the temperature. The system also has considerable computing power, thanks to a powerful chipset and 8GB of working memory.

NFC support
The BYD ATTO 2 also supports NFC technology, allowing a smartphone, keycard or wearable to act as a car key. Of course, the regular key is also always usable. Probably most buyers just use the key. There is also a BYD app so you can have remote insight into the car. For example, you can pre-heat or cool the car or pre-activate the seat heater The infotainment system even has a karaoke function integrated. Lyrics are displayed via the central display. With V2L (Vehicle-to Load), electrical appliances can be connected to the ATTO 2: from coffee machine to vacuum cleaner. This feature is standard and offers a charging power of up to 3.3 kW.
The technology of the BYD ATTO 2
Let’s also take a special look at the technology of the ATTO 2. The car is built on the so-called e-Platform 3.0. Integrated into it is a BYD Blade Battery with a capacity of 45.12 kWh. The ATTO 2 is BYD’s first compact model to use Cell-to-Body technology, where the Blade Battery is an integral part of the structure. In doing so, the top of the battery pack forms the floor of the passenger compartment.
Lithium iron phosphate battery, without cobalt
Speaking of that battery, the electric SUV has and lithium iron phosphate battery, without cobalt. Compared to lithium-ion batteries, this battery can withstand extreme temperatures and is less sensitive to temperature changes. Also, according to its makers, the battery can handle more charge and discharge cycles without significantly sacrificing capacity and can be charged to 100% each time. The battery also successfully completed the extreme “nail penetration test. Thus, the presence of such a Blade Battery is definitely a unique selling point.

Powertrain BYD ATTO 2
BYD will start delivering an ATTO 2 with a 130 kW and 290 Nm strong electric motor driving the front wheels. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes 7.9 seconds and the top speed reaches 160 km/h. The battery has a capacity of 45.1 kWh, resulting in a driving range of up to 312 km (WLTP). There is a choice of Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow driving modes. This particular powertrain has a braked towing weight of XXX kilograms. The car itself weighs 1,570 kilograms. That works out to 67 euros of road tax per quarter in the province of North Holland with a 75 percent discount.
Heat pump is standard
The Blade Battery is chargeable at 65 kW direct current (DC). Charging from 10-80% thus takes 37 minutes and charging from 30-80% takes 28 minutes. The ATTO 2 can also be charged with 11 kW of alternating current (3-phase). Charging from 0-100% takes 5.5 hours. As one of the few models in its segment, the ATTO 2 features a heat pump as standard. This helps to maximize the range, especially in cold weather. Pretty handy in the Netherlands. The car’s charging point is on the passenger side, in the front screen. Average energy consumption, according to BYD, is 16 kWh per 100 kilometers.

Equipment Active
And that also brings us to the equipment of this new SUV from Build Your Dreams. There are two versions to choose from, with similar technical specifications. The base version has been christened ATTO 2 Active. That version includes 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with smart high beam, LED taillights, a glass panoramic roof, NFC technology for access with a smartphone, rear parking sensors and camera, faux leather upholstery, a rotating 10.1-inch infotainment display and Vehicle 2 Load (V2L), among others. The ATTO 2 Active is available starting at 31,690 euros.
Equipment Boost
If you spend 33,690 euros – that is, 2,000 euros more – then you get the Boost version. This version offers front seat and steering wheel heating, ambient lighting, electric folding door mirrors, front parking sensors and a 360-degree camera as extras. It also features a larger infotainment display (12.8 inches), 15W wireless smartphone charging capability and an 8-speaker audio system.
Safety and colors
Each ATTO 2 has standard airbags, Driver Monitor System, adaptive cruise control, speed alert, lane keeping assist, blind spot detection, Door Opening Warning, traffic sign recognition, Automatic Emergency Braking, Hill Descent Control, Forward and Rear Collision Warning including Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Brake. There is a choice of four exterior colors, namely Climbing Grey (standard), Hiking Green, Skiing White and Cosmos Black. The latter three colors have an additional cost of 750 euros. Really colorful colors BYD does not provide.
Expansion of range
By the end of 2025, BYD will expand its range with the ATTO 2 Comfort. This model has a more powerful electric motor and a larger battery, which is good for a range of about 420 kilometers according to the WLTP test standard. In addition, the ATTO 2 Comfort offers even more luxury and comfort. This Comfort version gets a price tag of 37,190 euros in the Netherlands. You then get a battery of about 64 kWh and an estimated 204 hp of system power. An ATTO 2 DM-i, a plug-in hybrid, is also expected to appear.
