Refresh for BMW iX: what’s new?

January 29, 2025

Custom engineering BMW iX

Thanks to further development of the drive electronics and fine-tuning of the suspension and tires, energy consumption has been improved by more than 8% in the official WLTP test cycle (in the best-case scenario, depending on model and equipment). For the updated BMW iX xDrive60, this means an increase in driving range of around 60 kilometers.

New inverter technology

New battery cell technology increases the energy content of the high-voltage battery for the BMW iX xDrive45 by about 30 percent to 94.8 kWh. The high-voltage batteries of the other model variants offer a usable energy content of 109.1 kWh (BMW iX xDrive60) and 108.9 kWh (BMW iX M70 xDrive). New inverter technology in the electronics of all models improves the efficiency of the drive system. This converts energy from the battery to the electric motor more efficiently.

Together with the increased usable battery capacity for the updated BMW iX xDrive45 and other measures that increase efficiency, this leads to an increase in range of up to 40 percent, depending on the model. The BMW iX xDrive60 has a range based on the WLTP test cycle of up to 701 kilometers, while the WLTP test cycle range for the BMW iX xDrive45 increases to up to 602 kilometers and for the BMW iX M70 xDrive to up to 600 kilometers.

Combined Charging Unit

The Combined Charging Unit of the updated BMW iX xDrive45 now enables DC fast charging with an increased output of 175 kW. The maximum charging output of the other two model variants is 195 kW. Optimized preconditioning of the high-voltage battery and heating of the storage system is done via the heat pump of the air conditioning system. In addition, charging current control has been further developed to make optimal use of the high charging capacities. The charging connector of the redesigned BMW iX now has a release button.

AC charging is possible with maximum power of 22 kW. In addition, the BMW iX is suitable for the Plug & Charge Multi Contract function. The Connected Home Charging option enables solar and load-optimized charging. The range now also includes the new BMW Wallbox Plus.

Planning routes

In addition to increased range, the updated BMW iX also offers an improved user experience for route planning that takes optimized charging into account. The intuitive user interface allows customers to pre-enter their destination in the My BMW App, as well as their desired departure and arrival times and any desired stopovers. The suggested route from the BMW Maps navigation system can then be adjusted to include charging stations. Preferred charging station providers and desired charging status upon arrival at intermediate stops and at the destination can be determined just as easily. In an optimized route view, the customer is provided with precise information on the availability of charging stations, the required charging times and their impact on arrival time at the destination, charging costs and infrastructure in the vicinity of the charging station in question.

Are there any design changes?

The striking front design of the BMW iX is characterized in particular by the redesigned kidney grille and a structure of vertical and diagonal lines on the inside. The Iconic Glow kidney grille (standard for the redesigned iX M70 xDrive) is now available as an option.

The headlights have also been redesigned with vertical elements for daytime running lights and turn signals. Standard equipment on the redesigned BMW iX includes adaptive LED headlights with cornering light function and new city lights. The structure of the BMW kidney grille is reflected in the diagonal lines of the headlight caps.

The front and rear bumpers have also been slightly modified. More components have been painted in body color. The M Sport package, now available as an option for the all-electric SAV, emphasizes the vehicle’s dynamic character.

In combination with the optionally available M Sport Package Pro, the updated iX is equipped with dark M Shadow Line headlights and taillights. The BMW iX M70 xDrive comes standard with the design features of the M Sport Package and M Sport Package Pro, including a model-specific kidney grille with M logo, black exterior mirror caps and exclusive 22-inch M light-alloy wheels.

The range also includes the new paint color finishes Arctic Race Blue metallic, Dune Grey metallic, Carbonschwarz metallic, BMW Individual Frozen Deep Grey metallic, Tansanitblau metallic and BMW Individual Frozen Pure Grey metallic, Space Silver metallic (available from summer 2025). The Individual Exterior Line Titanium Bronze is also available as an option for the iX xDrive45 and the BMW iX xDrive60.

Extra power for BMW iX

With an electric motor on both the front and rear axles, all variants of the redesigned BMW iX have electric all-wheel drive. The drive system has been refined and the power electronics further developed to deliver noticeably more power. The iX xDrive45 delivers system power increased by 60 kW/82 hp to 300 kW/408 hp. The extra power results in a 1.0-second improvement in the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h to 5.1 seconds. The iX xDrive60 has a power increase of 15 kW/21 hp to 400 kW/544 hp and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 200 km/h.

The powertrain of the BMW iX M70 xDrive delivers up to 485 kW/659 hp in My Mode Sport and a maximum torque of 1,100 Nm, which is available when Launch Control is activated. The new iX M70 xDrive accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. Using the “1-foot rollout” method*, the time to sprint to 100 km/h is 3.5 seconds. The iX M70 xDrive reaches a top speed of 250 km/h.

Optimized chassis and suspension tuning

The new chassis and suspension setup for the new BMW iX is based on the increased performance of the drive system and the changed weight balance resulting from optimized battery technology. In addition, a hydraulic rear axle support bearing provides an optimized balance between sporty dynamics and driving comfort. Weight- and friction-optimized wheel hubs and tires with reduced rolling resistance and the highest efficiency label A+ also contribute to the increased efficiency of the new BMW iX.

The BMW iX’s suspension technology includes a double wishbone front axle, a five-link rear axle and electric steering with Servotronic function and variable ratio. The BMW iX M70 xDrive also features adaptive ride height control over two axles with electronically controlled shock absorbers and M-specific tuning and M-specific stabilizer bars. This top-of-the-line version further features Integral Active Steering and a sports brake system with red calipers. The standard equipment of all model variants now also includes HDC (Hill Descent Control) and the ability to disable DSC (Dynamic Stability Control).

As part of the M Sport Package, M Sport Package Pro or as standard on the top model, 21-inch and 22-inch M alloy wheels are available in four new variants. There is also a new range of 23-inch alloy wheels. The 22-inch and 23-inch wheels are combined with tires with integrated foam absorbers for improved sound insulation.

Other optional equipment for all model variants includes the Sky Lounge panoramic roof, Clear & Bold interior applications, an automatic soft-close function for the doors and active seat ventilation. But also consider the Heat Comfort package, the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, the BMW Individual Exterior Line Titanium Bronze, AC charging with up to 22 kW (standard for the iX M70 xDrive) and a power retractable tow bar.
