Production start of Ford Explorer in Cologne
Cologne
The Ford plant in Cologne is a historic production site that plays an important role in Ford’s European car production. Originally opened in 1930, the plant has a long history of vehicle production, with millions of cars rolling off the assembly line over the years.
$2 billion
Recently, Ford invested $2 billion to transform the plant into a state-of-the-art center for EV production. This investment is part of Ford’s broader strategy to become more sustainable and position itself as a leader in the EV market. The first EV to roll off the assembly line is the new electric Ford Explorer. A second EV, a new sporty crossover, will be unveiled soon. Its production will start later this year in Cologne.
600 robots
The plant’s modernization includes advanced manufacturing technologies and sustainable practices, including the use of renewable energy sources and efficient production processes to minimize its carbon footprint. Self-learning machines and more than 600 new robots are being deployed to perform welding, cutting, dusting, spraying and merging tasks.
