Porsche Vision 357: a shame not to put it into production

January 26, 2023

From Porsche 356 to Porsche 357

No less than 75 years ago, on June 8, 1948, the Porsche car brand was born with the presentation of the 356 No. 1 Roadster. By 1965, about 78,000 examples of the Porsche 356 had been built, supplied in a range of open and closed body versions and with different engines. The Porsche Vision 357 is an homage to the famous 356. But as far as we’re concerned, it doesn’t have to stop with this one. Porsche should just put it into production.

Ferry Porsche

What might Ferry Porsche’s dream of a sports car look like today? Porsche asked itself that question at the beginning of the development of the Porsche Vision 357. The answer was obvious: the shape of a 356 would serve as the basis.

Special birthday gift

“We have created a very special birthday present in the form of the Porsche Vision 357, one that uses the 356 as a base to underscore the importance of our design DNA,” said Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche. “The design study is an attempt to combine past, present and future with proportions reminiscent of the historic archetype and details that visualize prospects for the future.”

Built on the platform of a Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS

Porsche has built the Vision 357 on the platform of the 500-hp Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS. So does the necessary power, for this 356 tribute. Moreover, in the 718 Cayman GT4 RS lurks one of the most sensational Porsche powertrains ever. An excellent basis, then, for getting this Vision 357 ready for production, should that ever happen.
