Porsche Netherlands exchanges special painting for new Porsche Macan Electric
Lady with fur stole
From the many entries, a painting by Leo Gestel titled Lady with Fur stole was chosen as the most special object. The entrant cherished the painting for years, but decided to submit it for the Dream Swap just the same, as a result of which he can now call himself the proud owner of a new Porsche Macan.
Submissions reviewed
In collaboration with Catawiki, entries were judged based on their story, rarity, condition and financial value, among other factors. The in-house experts were impressed by the diverse range of unusual objects: from autographed soccer shirts, music memorabilia and art objects to vacation homes, rare cars and jewelry. The contributors’ connection to their object was also striking: from heirlooms passed down in the family for generations to coveted objects that collectors had been searching for for years.
Leo Gestel (1881-1941)
Painted in 1904, Lady with fur stole by Leo Gestel (1881-1941) was ultimately chosen as the most extraordinary object. The work dates from the early period of Gestel’s career and is remarkably large (120 x 69 cm); the majority of Gestel’s oeuvre is considerably smaller, which makes Lady with Fur stole unique and special. In the painting, a lady poses on the ferry across the IJ River in Amsterdam. The light from the low winter sun comes from the side and grazes the woman. Gestel gave special attention to the play of light and shadow on the blue coat and the glare on the waves of the IJ.
Large and penetrating
The submitter had owned the painting for years and was particularly attached to it, but the prospect of trading it for a new, electric Porsche Macan won him over. “I love this work. It’s a big and penetrating portrait. In the background you see the skyline of Amsterdam anno 1904, which is already 120 years ago. Super cool, details like the sparkle in the water, the waves and her gaze make it special. It has hung in several places in the house.”
