Opel Mokka GSE Rally: electric rally monster with lots of power!

May 26, 2025

If we do it, we do it right, they must have thought at Opel. The Opel Mokka GSE Rally is the most powerful electric rally car to date, with more than double the power of the Corsa Electric Rally. Presented at the ELE Rally in Eindhoven (May 23 and 24), the spectacular newcomer is a striking step forward within the successful Opel Electric Rally Cup program.

Opel Electric Rally Cup: approachable, international, inclusive

Since its inception, the Opel Electric Rally Cup “powered by ADAC” has become a unique and official FIA-recognized championship for electric rally cars. The entry level is low, but the sporting bar is high. With more than 60 participating drivers from different countries, including both men and women, the program offers young talents a serious stage to gain experience in the motorsport of the future. The cars – so far based on the Opel Corsa – are used in various European rallies.

Dual power, maximum spectacle

We previously had the honor of driving the Opel Corsa Rally Electric, a car that surprised us with its balance and speed. But where the Corsa makes do with 100 kW (136 hp), the Mokka GSE Rally takes a completely different tack: 206 kW (280 hp) and 345 Nm of torque, good for pure performance and adrenaline at Rally4 level.

Design with guts

The Mokka GSE Rally stands out anyway. The black and yellow decals with large “OMG! GSE” letters, striking rims, yellow brake calipers and the functional roof air intake give the car an unmistakable rally character. The matte black hood with contrasting print “Mokka GSE RALLY” underlines that this is no ordinary Mokka, but an electric cannon.

Technology without compromise

Under the skin, the Mokka has also been tackled quite a bit. The battery is the same as that of the regular Mokka Electric (54 kWh), but everything around it is pure rally tech. Think a limited slip differential, sequential racing gearbox and reinforced driveshafts. The chassis is lightweight, with all unnecessary items removed from the interior, making way for a roll cage and bucket seats. The Bilstein suspension provides grip, control and stability. In the front, McPherson struts with uniball suspension have been chosen; in the rear, there is a rigid axle with modified rally suspension.

Electronic aids like ABS, ESP and traction control? Those are not the order of the day. Here it’s all about the driver’s skill and interaction with the car. The engine and battery management software has been optimized for performance under rally conditions, based on experience with the Corsa Electric. Indeed, Opel has already accumulated more than 44,000 km of electric rally experience in recent years, in which it says it has learned the necessary lessons.

Safety at the highest level

Safety is obviously top priority. An FIA-homologated roll cage, six-point harnesses, additional floor protection and a specially developed battery housing ensure professional-level protection. The 400V system is monitored by the alarm system, which provides immediate visual and audible warning in the event of danger. In an emergency, the entire system is automatically switched off, while a non-conductive extinguishing system is ready to intervene.

Future-oriented: the beginning of eRally5

The Mokka GSE Rally complies with the new FIA eRally5 regulations. This makes it not only a technological showcase, but also an important model in the future of electric customer sport. Starting in 2026, this model could be used worldwide in a variety of rally competitions. We are curious and certainly hope to drive this car one day!
