No speed records on Bonneville salt flats because of…water!
In some places, the racetrack is more than 25 inches under water. So it makes sense that organizers have called off the 2022 Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials event for this year.
Unprecedented: salt flats under water
Highly unusual is the situation though. The Bonneville salt flats may have once been a lake, but water has long ceased to undulate there. After evaporation, a thick layer of salt remained. A plain in an extremely dry climate.
Speeds above 600 km/h
The conditions are ideal for setting speed records and have been for decades. On September 25, 2010, for example, a Suzuki Hayabusa clocked a speed of over 605 mph. Check out this list.
Upset again
Weather systems around the world have been pretty upset this summer, as evidenced by the heavy rainfall in the state of Utah, where the Bonneville Salt Lake is located. While here in Europe the problems are piling up due to unprecedented dry weather conditions.
Next year new opportunities
The water is not gone in time so the record motorcycle races will not be held on the Bonneville salt flats. They have been cancelled for this year.
