‘New construction home required to be equipped with charging station’

February 2, 2023

900,000 new housing units by 2030

Data from the Central Bureau of Statistics shows that more than 74,000 new homes will be added by 2022, with another 10,000 homes from transformation, for example, offices and stores converted to housing. This marks a first step toward 900,000 new homes by 2030.

New construction home requirements, charging station included?

A newly built home must already have a heat pump and solar panels, but direct integration of a charging connection for an electric car has not been considered. Of course, not every home has its own driveway where an EV can charge, but for homes where that is possible – where an EV can therefore be charged on private land – it is quite interesting to equip these homes directly with a charging station.

This new construction home has a charging station.

Encouraging electric driving

The reason is simple: the Climate Accord states that the Netherlands must emit 49% less CO2 by 2030. By 2050, it will be 95%. Electric driving should help achieve those goals. For example, all new passenger cars coming on the market in 2030 must be 100% electric. These cars then run on electricity from a battery, hydrogen fuel cell or solar panels.

Switch to EV smaller

If a new home is immediately equipped with a charging station, there is an immediate incentive for the new occupant to choose an EV, if they do not already have one. And should the first occupant not do so, perhaps the second homeowner will opt for an EV. In any case, it makes the switch to an EV a lot easier, plus it’s a small effort to include the charging station right in the construction process.

Groundwork needed

Installing a charging station for an electric car often requires some ground work as well. During the construction period, all lines are open and it’s quick turnaround to immediately install the necessary connections for a charging station. If the charging station is not installed until later, an already constructed driveway must also be opened up again. So, in that regard, not a bad idea, equipping suitable new homes with a charging station by default. In any case, it makes a new home ready for the future immediately.
