Never before have there been so many campers and caravans in the Netherlands
Camping is wildly popular
As of April 1, 2025, there were 627,093 motorhomes and caravans registered. A substantial growth from the 612,460 units a year earlier. The caravan in particular is making a comeback: the number rose to 423,888, over 1,700 more than last year.
The motor home also remains as popular as ever. The motorhome has long since ceased to be only for pensionados. Young families and couples are also increasingly finding their way to motorhome life. In November 2024, the 200,000th motorhome was registered (see photo above), now there are already 203,205. By comparison, at the beginning of April last year the counter stood at 190,273.
Sales figures continue to rise
The enthusiasm is also reflected in sales this year. In the first quarter of 2025, 677 new motorhomes were sold, an increase of 7.5 percent compared to the same quarter last year. Used motorhomes are also in demand: 7,436 occasion motorhomes changed hands, slightly more than half of them through specialty dealers.
For caravans, new sales fell slightly in the first months of this year: 1,672 new units, just nine fewer than last year. Used caravans, on the other hand, are doing better: 8,897 used caravans were sold in the first quarter, a growth of 4.2 percent. Some 38 percent of these were purchased through a caravan company, the rest were sold from private to private.
Camping Champions
“In the midst of all kinds of international and economic developments, our camping industry continues to stand proud. Moreover, the Dutch buy 12 percent of all new caravans in Europe, so we are once again doing credit to our title of camping champions,” said BOVAG Caravan and Motorhome Companies president Rolf Reinders.
