Most extreme Mustang ever: this is the Ford Mustang GTD
Ford Mustang GTD
“We didn’t develop a car for the track, we created a race car for public roads. The Ford Mustang GTD takes racing technology from our Mustang GT3 race car, wraps it in a carbon fiber Mustang body and unleashes it for the street,” said a clearly excited Jim Farley, president and CEO of Ford.
An estimated 800 hp!
The Mustang GTD was developed by largely the same people behind the Ford Mustang race cars and the Le Mans-winning GT. It was built to be the fastest going Mustang ever. Features of this insane Mustang include carbon ceramic brakes, an 8-speed transaxle dual-clutch automatic transmission and a lightweight carbon fiber driveshaft. The weight distribution is almost perfect. Powering it is a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 with an estimated 800 horsepower. The engine reaches 7,500 rpm and exhales through a titanium exhaust system.
No more luggage space…
Where there was once a trunk, the semi-active suspension is now housed, as well as a hydraulic control system and transaxle cooling system. A special cover replaces the regular trunk lid. This cover contains two air intakes to direct air from the rear window into the room and through the heat exchangers. A substantial rear spoiler has also been considered to improve downforce.
“The hardware was carefully selected and developed to enable blistering lap times. The goal for this project was clear: to go much, much faster than ever before with a target Nürburgring time of less than 7 minutes. This makes it Ford’s fastest road-going Mustang ever,” said Greg Goodall, Ford’s chief program engineer.
Wide tires!
Good grip is so important with this performance. Up front, the Mustang GTD has 325 millimeters of wide rubber, as wide as Ford GT rear tires. Behind, Ford even mounts tires with a width of 345 millimeters. Magnesium wheels reduce unsprung weight. The wheels have a similar design to the Mustang GT3 race car. To force the car to stop again, Ford fitted a powerful Brembo brake system with carbon ceramic brake discs.
Ford Mustang GTD is pricey!
Production of the Ford Mustang GTD is limited, but Ford is not yet making any statements about numbers. The car will have a price tag of about $300,000. Ford is producing the model in part at the Ford Flat Rock Assembly Plant. The car will then be transported to Multimatic facilities in Markham, Canada, where it will be hand-finished by the Ford Performance and Multimatic teams. The Mustang GTD will be available in late 2024/early 2025.
