Mercedes is working on baby G-Class: here’s what we know
Own platform, own face
The G-Class is one of the longest-running models you can still buy new. Of course, it has been modernized considerably over the years, but its recognizable, angular shape immediately betrays its roots: the 1970s. Yet Mercedes is far from finished with its archetypal SUV. After the electric G 580 EQ , the brand will soon come out with another new variant, which we will simply call the baby G for now.
New platform
Those who think Mercedes is simply casting an existing compact SUV in G form are wrong. The baby G will get a completely new platform, developed specifically for the smaller model. We’re guessing a compact ladder structure and short overhangs. Even details like the door handles will be designed specifically for the small G-Class, according to the brand. So few parts will be borrowed from existing models.
Only as an electric car?
Whereas the large G-Class is still available with combustion engines, Mercedes seems to be aiming for an all-electric powertrain for the baby G. The brand will not reveal anything about performance and range for the time being. Still, it would not be a surprise if versions with a gasoline engine eventually appear.
Recognizable but fresher
In terms of appearance, the baby G remains true to the original. The straight lines, round headlights and angular bodywork remain, but are given a more modern touch. The image below shows what we think it could look like.

Subbrand
Mercedes wants to make the G-Class a true sub-brand family, similar to what Land Rover is doing with the Range Rover and Defender. In it, the baby G will be the accessible entry-level model, while the large G-Class will retain the role of flagship. According to Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius, the first prototypes will hit the road soon. When the production model will hit the market? Probably not before 2027. Just a little patience, then…
