Mercedes-AMG comes out with its own performance SUV

November 7, 2024

AMG Electric Architecture

The first dedicated electric vehicle architecture developed by Mercedes-AMG listens to the name AMG.EA (AMG Electric Architecture). AMG.EA is still at the beginning of a demanding and comprehensive test plan, which will cover multiple test terrains, continents and climate zones. The AMG.EA drive concept is based on axial flux motor technology. Mercedes-AMG promises high power density, compact dimensions and low weight. The powertrain also includes a new high-voltage battery.

Dedicated AMG SUV

Powerful SUVs have long been an integral part of the AMG portfolio.  Today, Mercedes-AMG offers a total of six SUV models with the GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS and EQE SUV. The iconic Mercedes-AMG G 63 “Geländewagen” is of course the flagship when it comes to performance off-road vehicles. A dedicated AMG SUV will be added in the future.

In this latest SUV project, Mercedes-AMG is designing the entire vehicle architecture itself for the first time. This full-size SUV will be the second model built on the all-electric high-performance AMG.EA platform. It is also the sixth vehicle developed entirely by the performance specialists from Affalterbach, following the GT, SL, previous-generation GT and SLS models.

Michael Schiebe speaking

“SUVs have been among our most popular models for years. With the ‘Born in Affalterbach’ SUV, we are capitalizing on this trend by offering our customers a truly fascinating high-performance off-road vehicle based on the AMG.EA platform. Our new high-performance architecture follows a clear philosophy: ‘AMG First, EV Second’. This means that the vehicles not only excel as electric vehicles, but also embody AMG’s core qualities: emotion and performance,” said Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Executive Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of divisions Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes-Maybach.
