Massive speed check leads to 23,000 fines in the Netherlands
Flash Marathon
From August 5 to 11, police officers throughout Europe were on standby with their laser guns, ready to fine speeding drivers.
The speed camera marathon certainly did not go unnoticed in the Netherlands, as no fewer than 23,000 fines were issued.
For 156 drivers it even got out of hand: they had to surrender their driver’s license immediately because they were speeding more than 50 kilometers per hour.
Roadpol
The speed camera marathon is an initiative of Roadpol, an alliance of several European police forces.
Although nobody is happy with a speeding fine, the idea behind these checks is clear: to make drivers aware of the dangers of speeding, which is still one of the main causes of serious traffic accidents.
By giving drivers a wake-up call, the police hope that road users will drive more quietly and safely in the future.
