Lightyear halts production Lightyear 0
Solar car
For years, the bright Dutch minds at Lightyear were developing the Lightyear 0. In 2023 it finally happened: the “solar car” went into production. Not in the Netherlands, but at Finland’s Valmet Automotive. At first, one car per week would roll off the assembly line; later production would be increased. A total of 946 units would be built of the electric car with solar panels on the roof and a price tag of 250,000 euros. But that’s not going to happen. The brand is stopping production.
Lightyear 2
Indeed, Lightyear has decided to focus its focus and (financial) resources entirely on the successor to the 0, the Lightyear 2. This car, with a target price of about 40,000 euros, is more accessible to a wider audience. The company failed to focus on two models at once.
CEO and co-founder Lex Hoefsloot: ‘Unfortunately we had to make this decision. The whole development process of Lightyear 0 has provided our company with many valuable lessons over the past years. We are now focusing all our energy on building Lightyear 2 to make it available to customers in time.’
