Kawasaki goes classic
While the roots of the W800 models go back to the 1966 W1 650, Kawasaki’s first four-stroke, large-cylinder motorcycle, Meguro has an even longer history.
It is one of Japan’s most prestigious brand names that first appeared on a motorcycle 100 years ago anno 2024.
Kawasaki W230 and Meguro S1
At the heart of these models is a characterful 233cc air-cooled single-cylinder.
The engine is designed with a focus on pulling power.
A balancer shaft reduces vibration and provides smooth power delivery at all speeds.
“Building a beautiful engine” was the objective.
This led to classic details such as, for example, the rounded cooling fins and special crankcase covers.
Don’t expect high performance
A power rating is not yet given by Kawasaki, but we estimate that the single-pitter will not be a fan of high revs.
At a maximum output of around 20 hp, it will probably stick.
It’s more about torque.
Kawasaki does specify that.
The maximum is 19 Nm at 5,800 rpm.
Fortunately, there is a six-speed transmission, so you can stay close to that maximum while shifting gears.
So really a bike for nice quiet cruising through and around town.
And then these light classics definitely treat you to very low fuel consumption.
Classic chassis
A telescopic front fork with 37 mm diameter fork legs provides a balanced, comfortable ride.
At the rear, there are dual shock absorbers, providing a classic look.
The rear dampers can be preloaded in 5 stages.
The low seat height makes the W230 very accessible to smaller riders.
At 143 kg rider weight, this model is one of the lightest in this category which benefits the power-to-weight ratio.
The front disc brake ( 265 mm) has a caliper with double pistons and the rear with single.
Peashooter exhausts
Steel front and rear fenders, peashooter exhausts, wire wheels and instrumentation emphasize the authenticity and love of a classic-looking motorcycle.
Design details of the Meguro S1 are taken directly from the 1964 Kawasaki 250 Meguro SG.
For example, the Meguro has a chromed fuel tank with painted panels and an authentic Meguro badge.
The new W230 is available in Metallic Ocean Blue/Ebony and the Meguro S1 in Ebony with chrome accents.
