In this factory BMW will soon build the Neue Klasse
The Neue what?
Neue Klasse you say? Yes indeed, this is what BMW is calling its next generation of electric models. By the end of 2025, production of the Neue Klasse will begin in Europe. The scoop is for an electric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) that will be the first to roll off the assembly line at the BMW Group plant in Debrecen, Hungary. Production of an electric sedan will start in Munich in 2026. Additional production capacity will be added in Mexico the following year, with an initial focus on SAV models.
80,000 square meters
The Mexican BMW plant in San Luis Potosí was commissioned in 2019. About 3,700 employees currently work on the production of the BMW 3 Series Sedan, the BMW 2 Series Coupe and the BMW M2 models for the global market. The brand is now further preparing the plant for the future, with the construction of a high-voltage battery production line, covering an area of more than 80,000 square meters. The brand will also soon build batteries in Debrecen (Hungary), Shenyang (China), Woodruff near Spartanburg (USA) and Irlbach-Straßkirchen (Lower Bavaria).
Neue batteries
For the Neue Klasse, BMW Group is using the newly developed round battery cells for the first time. These offer a 20 percent greater energy density and make charging up to 30 percent faster. The range also increases by 30 percent, according to the brand.
Body shop
In addition to integrating battery production, other changes are taking place at the San Luis Potosí plant. The body shop will be expanded by nearly 20,000 square feet to total more than 90,000 square feet. The assembly and logistics departments will also be expanded by nearly 10,000 square meters each.
