Osamu Suzuki: a humble man

Osamu Suzuki was one of the most influential figures in the Japanese auto industry. He died on Dec. 25, 2024, of malignant lymphoma, a form of cancer. He reached the respectable age of 94. Suzuki’s life and work will be remembered as an era of innovation, dedication and unwavering vision that took Suzuki Motor Corporation to global heights.

A humble beginning

Osamu Suzuki was born on Jan. 30, 1930, in Gero City, located in Gifu Prefecture of Japan. After completing his law degree at Chuo University in 1953, he chose a career in industry. In 1958, he joined Suzuki Motor, then a relatively small family-owned company focused primarily on motorcycles and small vehicles.

A life in the service of growth

His rise within the company was remarkable. After his appointment as Director in 1963, increasingly senior positions followed: Managing Director in 1967, Senior Managing Director in 1973 and finally President in 1978. Under his leadership, Suzuki Motor Corporation transformed into a global player, known for its reliable and affordable vehicles.

By 1990, the year the company was officially named Suzuki Motor Corporation, Osamu Suzuki was already at the top of the international auto industry. He continued to lead the company as Chairman and President until he assumed the role of Senior Advisor in 2021.

Contributing to the world

Suzuki’s influence extended beyond business. He was praised for his ability to build bridges between cultures and markets. His contributions were recognized with numerous awards, including the Sitara-e-Pakistan (1985), the Padma Bhushan in India (2007) and several high honors from Hungary and Japan. His induction into the Japan Automobile Hall of Fame in 2002 was a fitting recognition of his role in the history of the automobile industry.

A personal legacy

Osamu Suzuki’s legacy is reflected not only in the impressive growth of Suzuki Motor Corporation, but also in his values. He was known for his modesty and dedication to family and community. This is reflected in his wish for a subdued farewell: the funeral service was held in private and the family kindly requests that no flowers, condolence calls or other gestures of sympathy be sent.

His eldest son, Toshihiro Suzuki, remains involved in the company that made his father great. Suzuki Motor Corporation plans a later date to commemorate his life and contributions, giving colleagues, friends and the international community an opportunity to say goodbye to a great man.

An indelible stamp

With a career spanning more than six decades, Osamu Suzuki has left an indelible mark on the automotive industry. His vision of innovation and accessibility has given millions of people around the world access to mobility. His name will always be synonymous with determination, leadership and the spirit of progress.

The Motoring Hall of Fame

Osamu Suzuki is one of only 39 highly acclaimed VIPs from around the world inducted into The Motoring Hall of Fame (The MHOF) since 2010. “Osamu Suzuki is without a doubt one of our most deserving inductees ever,” said The Motoring Hall of Fame’s international jury at the time of his induction in December 2023. “His latest role as ‘Father of the MHOF House’ is the icing on the cake for him … and for us.”

“We are talking about a great and very worthy leader in the auto industry, who has successfully served for nearly half a century as CEO of Suzuki’s global empire. A track record like this is unprecedented at the top of fierce competition in the global auto industry. By recognizing and sticking to the importance of designing and building small, credible, affordable, but high-quality two- and four-wheel drive cars for customers around the world, this wise ‘Hall of Famer’ demonstrated a vision that many bosses of rival companies lacked.”
