Important step in tackling congestion on A27
A27: a monster job
The tender for the section between Everdingen and Hooipolder was already completed in December 2022, but the widening of the A27 between Houten and Everdingen was still open. That contract, too, has now been awarded. De Groene Waarden, a combination of the companies Besix, Mobilis and its partners van Gelder, Mourik Infra and Besix Infra Nederland are going to complete this monster job.
Completion between 2029-2031
The total bottleneck between Houten and Hooipolder is expected to be completed between 2029-2031. You read correctly: that’s not for another six years. So for the next few years, we’ll just be stuck in traffic jams on the A27.
A27 is major traffic artery
Michèle Blom, director general of Rijkswaterstaat, says: “We can now tackle this important traffic artery between Houten and Hooipolder along its entire length. Both the environment and also the road user are going to benefit from this through better traffic flow on the highway, but also the reduction of stealth traffic on the regional roads. This will benefit road safety.”
File top 10
Over the years, the Houten-Hooipolder section has been intensively loaded by more and more and heavier traffic. On weekdays, more than 100,000 vehicles per day travel this congested stretch of road, which ranks high in the congestion top 10.
This is going to be there
Over seven kilometers between Houten and Everdingen, the road southbound will be widened to four lanes. In the northern direction, the two lanes and a rush-hour lane will remain. In addition, the Hagestein Bridge will be renewed and the Wood Bridge will be widened. The new Hagestein Bridge will feature a bicycle connection.
Course of the project
‘We look forward to building a great partnership with the Department of Public Works and De Groene Waarden over the next few years. The two-phase approach we are using with the Department of Public Works, where risks are better controlled and more equitably distributed, contributes to a good infrastructure sector and a more predictable course of the project. It offers us opportunities to fit this extension of the A27 between Houten and Everdingen into this beautiful environment in a vital, safe and sustainable way,” said Nic De Roeck, General Manager BESIX Nederland.
If no use will be made of the objection period, final award is expected on April 4, 2023. A website of its own has been set up for the widening of the A27 with more information. Also, be sure to check out the visualizations of what the A27 will look like.
