Hyundai CRATER Concept is a futuristic off-road SUV

November 27, 2025

Hyundai and XRT

Hyundai’s XRT design is a design and equipment direction that focuses on increased ruggedness, functionality and off-road use within existing Hyundai models. It is not a separate model series, but a design line that Hyundai applies to models such as the IONIQ 5 XRT, Santa Cruz XRT and Palisade XRT Pro. In Europe, we do not yet know the XRT line.

Design focused on off-road functionality

The Hyundai CRATER Concept was developed by the Hyundai America Technical Center in Irvine, Calif. Hyundai positions the Hyundai CRATER Concept as an exploration of adventurous design within the XRT label. The exterior follows the so-called Art of Steel design language, with the properties of steel visibly reflected in the body lines. The compact monocoque body is the basis for the proportions, complemented by a short overhang and sharp approach and exit angles.

Wide wheel arches

The SUV gets wide wheel arches, a pronounced skidplate and a roof platform for lighting or extra luggage. Limb risers run from the hood to the roof and protect against low branches. The 18-inch wheels have a geometric design and are paired with 33-inch off-road tires for traction and ground clearance.

Exterior functional details

Some design details have dual functions. One of the storage hooks can be used as a bottle opener, while the camera modules can be detached from the outside mirrors to be used as a flashlight or recording camera during outdoor activities.

Interior with a focus on flexibility

Inside, the CRATER Concept gets a robust interior with sustainable materials. The design is aimed at users who bring their digital devices with them; Hyundai therefore adopts a “Bring Your Own Device” approach where the interface adapts to the device being used. A wide head-up display combines the rearview camera with additional driving information, among other things. The crash pad is designed as a curved metal panel with subtle perforations for indirect ambient lighting. A visible roll cage forms a structural element in the interior and includes integrated handles.

Seats and controls for off-road use

The seats are designed for stability when driving on unpaved terrain, with three-dimensional padding and a four-point harness system. The steering wheel has a pixel display in the center and quick buttons for terrain modes such as Snow, Sand, Mud, Auto and XRT. In the center area are mechanical dials and indicators. Hyundai also integrates a removable Bluetooth speaker, a fire extinguisher, a first aid kit and several small storage points.

Offroad features

The CRATER Concept features a central off-road controller for setting the limited slip differentials, traction control and braking functions. The SUV also includes downhill brake control, trailer brake control, a compass and an altimeter.

Dune Gold Matte

The exterior color Dune Gold Matte is inspired by the coastal and desert regions of California. In the interior, Hyundai chooses dark tones, including black leather and Alcantara, complemented by metallic accents and orange details. Topographical patterns on various surfaces refer to outdoor activities and add to the thematic look.
