Hyundai: “Accelerating electrification in Europe”

January 28, 2025

Hyundai’s plans in a nutshell

Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) continues its strategic focus on sustainable mobility and future-oriented growth with the recently completed expansion of its test center at the Nürburgring and the opening in March 2025 of the new Square Campus at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center.

Hyundai history near Nürburgring

Over the past decade, HMG has achieved much at and near the Nürburgring in Germany’s Eifel region. It began sustainability testing there in 2011, and in 2013 HMG opened a complete test center there. It highlights the continued focus on innovation at the Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands. With the recent expansion of the test center at the Nürburgring, HMG has an additional 834 square meters of advanced testing facilities such as new workshops, specialized laboratories and high-performance charging capacity for electric vehicles (EVs).

Accelerating electrification in Europe

Tyrone Johnson, Managing Director of the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center, said, “This expansion is a major step toward realizing the infrastructure needed for the future of mobility. It reflects our confidence in the growth of the EV sector and our commitment to sustainable innovation. This is how we aim to accelerate electrification in Europe.”

Commitment to high-performance electric cars

“High-performance electric cars are an important part of our DNA,” Johnson continued. “With our facilities at the Nürburgring, we can seamlessly integrate our N-performance into our EV strategy. At the same time, we also continue to refine conventional engine technology. Our new facilities at the Nürburgring confirm our commitment to high-performance electric cars.”

Strengthening European R&D capacity.

The expansion continues with the new Square Campus at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center. This 25,000-square-meter facility, located in Germany’s Rhine-Main region, is designed to set new standards for the automotive industry. The state-of-the-art center will soon house HMG’s largest test bench for measurements of sound, noise and vibration in automobiles (NVH dyno), as well as advanced chassis and powertrain test benches. These machines and equipment allow HMG engineers to simulate and evaluate the performance of new models under a variety of conditions without the need for on-road testing.

Square Campus focuses on improving EVs, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), infotainment and electrification technology. In doing so, HMG aims to provide customized solutions that respond to customers’ changing needs, especially in the European market.

New expanded facilities

Johnson: “Germany is the center of automotive excellence. Our investment in this powerful ecosystem also reflects our confidence in the development capability and innovative strength of the Rhine-Main region. Moreover, it demonstrates our commitment to the passionate engineers and partners who make it all possible. With our new expanded facilities, we offer them a hub for creative collaboration. Here they have the resources and cutting-edge technologies they need to push boundaries and create a more dynamic, connected future for the automobile in Europe.”
