Frontline MGA Factory Edition is state-of-the-art classic car

April 21, 2025

Frontline MGA Factory Edition: lightweight and vibrant

The basis of the driving experience lies in its weight: only 815 kilograms (dry). Customers can choose from two atmospheric Ford Duratec engines: a 2.0-liter with 225 hp or a 2.5-liter with 290 hp. Both engines feature individual throttle bodies, a modern ECU, a stainless steel exhaust system and finely tuned camshafts. The result is lively power delivery with a direct and linear character, combined with a five-speed manual transmission that enhances the classic driving feel.

Undercarriage with modern precision

The chassis was developed entirely by Frontline itself, which the makers say has created a refined balance between classic character and modern driving dynamics. The Factory Edition features a limited slip differential with reinforced axles and bearings, and a five-arm rear suspension, co-developed with partner Nitron. Up front, telescopic dampers and modified geometry provide sharp steering. Braking power comes from front four-piston brakes and rear two-piston brakes. The distinctive fly-off handbrake has been retained and integrated into a modern braking system. Electronic power steering is present but retains the authentic steering feel.

Refined details, familiar form

The exterior remains true to the silhouette of the original MGA, but with subtle modernizations. Bright LED headlights replace the old-fashioned city lights and create a sleeker front end. Each lamp glass is etched with the Frontline logo. On the hood, for the first time in Frontline’s history, there is its own brand logo.

Personal approach

Tim Fenna, founder and chief engineer of Frontline Cars, emphasizes that the MGA Factory Edition is not just about technology. “We want our customers to feel a connection to their car, just like a custom-made piece of clothing. Each one is tailored to the buyer’s needs, from paint and upholstery to handling.” That personal touch is possible in the configuration room at the headquarters in Abingdon, as well as remotely via online sessions.

For riders, not for showcases

The MGA Factory Edition is built in both roadster and coupe form, always based on a fully restored body. Frontline emphasizes that it is not a museum piece, but a car to drive – regardless of the weather. Production will begin after the premiere at Goodwood. Delivery to customers is scheduled for summer 2026.

Frontline is offering the car in both right- and left-hand drive versions, with a special focus on customers in the United States and Australia, two markets where the original MGA has a strong history. Interested parties can begin assembling their own now.

Frontline Cars, known as Frontline Developments until 2023, was founded in 1991 with a clear goal: to take the essence of classic MG models to the next level. The brand has since existed for more than 30 years and is known for its entirely hand-built cars, each of which honors the heritage of MG’s past.

The MGA: a milestone in MG history

The original MGA appeared in 1955 and marked a striking new chapter for MG. The model broke radically with its predecessors thanks to its streamlined bodywork, low seating and minimalist approach. It was the last model created under the watchful eye of MG founder Cecil Kimber and quickly became one of Britain’s most successful sports cars for export.

Between 1955 and 1962, more than 100,000 examples of the MGA rolled off the assembly line, more than 80 percent of which were shipped abroad. Especially in the United States and Australia, the car found eager demand – countries where the classic British roadster is still cherished. The combination of elegance, driving dynamics and sheer charm endeared the MGA to a wide audience.

Yet the model also had its limitations. The technology of the time did not yet offer the refinement and performance that the design perhaps deserved. That is precisely why Frontline sees in the MGA Factory Edition an opportunity to bring the car’s original potential to fruition after all – while retaining its character, but with today’s resources.
