Five millionth car rolls off the line at British Toyota plant
Burnaston
The five millionth car was a Corolla Hatchback GR Sport Hybrid. The Burnaston plant was the first outside Japan where Toyota began producing hybrid models. Since its establishment in 1989, the plant has been a fixture in Toyota’s European production. More than 3.25 billion euros have since been invested in the facility, making it an important link in Toyota’s European network.
Hybrid
Burnaston plays a unique role in Toyota’s European car production. In recent years, the plant has focused entirely on hybrids, with the location now leading the way in this field. Burnaston and the associated engine plant in Deeside, North Wales, make up Toyota Manufacturing UK (TMUK). Production began in 1992 and some 3,000 people now work there. A large proportion of the vehicles (about 85%) are exported to other European countries.
