Ferrari Purosangue: passing the Lamborghini Urus?
Thoroughbred Ferrari
Four doors, four seats, the Ferrari Purosangue is actually at odds with Ferrari’s basic principles. But with the continued demand for SUVs, Ferrari also tacked on. Development of an SUV was begun. But in the Ferrari way. Actually, here you are looking at a supercar with SUV looks. At least, that is how Ferrari communicates about its Purosangue. In Italian, this word means “thoroughbred.
Door construction
Unique to the Purosangue is its door construction. The car has suicidal doors, where the rear doors open slightly differently from conventional four-door models. It does make for a very spacious entry. In addition, the Ferrari Purosanque has a superb-sounding powertrain: and V12 engine (F140IA) without turbos, i.e., atmospheric.
V12 engine
Intake, timing and exhaust systems were completely redesigned, while the cylinder heads were derived from the 812 Competizione. All together, it makes 725 hp and 716 Nm of torque. That results in a 0-100 time of just 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 310 km/h. Extremely fast for an SUV, even for one with a superman cape.
Carbon roof construction
Ferrari has made every effort to keep the Purosangue light. So the Italians applied a carbon fiber roof to lower the center of gravity. Still, this SUV is no lightweight. It weighs 2,033 kilograms dry. But knowing Ferrari, they probably know how to mask that weight extremely well, thanks in part to super-smart electronics and variable power distribution.
Ferrari sprinkles terms such as SSC 8.0: 4RM-S evo and ABS ‘EVO’ with Grip Estimation 2.0. Terms the normal mortal would question. But according to Ferrari, each contributes to better handling and performance.
Driving assistance systems Ferrari Purosangue
As a family SUV, the Ferrari Purosangue also features several driver assistance systems, think Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Automatic Emergency Brake System (AEB), Auto High Beam (HBA/HBAM), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), Driver Drowsiness and Attention (DDA) as well as a rear-view parking camera (NSW). In short: fully loaded.
You can even get it with Hill Descent Control, should you want to drive off-road. The question is who will do that with his Ferrari. It is expected that 99 percent of buyers will simply drive their Purosangue on asphalt. Perhaps even on the racetrack. One thing is certain: Ferrari’s first SUV is a reality. And it is not a traditional SUV, but an SUV according to Ferrari’s principles. A supercar, then, with slightly more seats and a higher body.
Competitors
The starting price of the Ferrari Purosanque is not yet known. That will follow at a later stage. Competitors to the Ferrari include the Audi RSQ8, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne Coupe Turbo GT and Bentley Bentayga Speed. But Ferrari trumps them all, when it comes to performance. The game is on.
