Exhibition Supercars of the 90’s at Louwman Museum: a must?

July 5, 2024

‘Supercars of the 1990s’

From July 5 to September 1, 2024, the Louwman Museum will be dedicated to “Supercars of the 1990s. The Louwman Museum has managed to bring together an impressive collection of super sports cars. Several models have not been shown on Dutch soil before and a few rarely see the light of day.

Sharing auto evolution with public

“It is the task of the Louwman Museum to share with the public all facets and periods of the automotive evolution. This time the time machine is set to the 1990s. We highlight the supercars of that era, because in that decade there seemed to be a real craze around high performance sports cars. The groundwork for this was already laid in the 1980s. New brands were emerging. Many introductions were planned especially for the early 1990s. It was a financial crisis around 1992/93 that made wealthy car enthusiasts reluctant, so the order intake for supercars collapsed and new sports car brands went bankrupt or projects were terminated prematurely,” says Sjoerd van Bilsen, curator at the Louwman Museum.

Limited production volume

The Louwman Museum managed to bring together a unique collection. For this purpose, the term supercar is defined as limited production volume, at least 500 horsepower and a top speed of over 300 mph. “Within it, a diversity of models can be admired, divided into several categories: production models, limited editions, homologation cars and prototypes. Some models have not been shown in the Netherlands before, not even in the Benelux. And the group of sports cars an sich as a whole has not been shown in the Netherlands before. Nor in the Benelux and not even in Europe. Maybe not even in the world…,” Van Bilsen adds.
