Comprehensive safety report Volvo EX30

EuroNCAP tested the 1775 kilogram Volvo EX30 Plus Single Motor Extended Range.

Volvo EX30: adult occupant protection

On the adult occupant protection component, EuroNCAP says the following:

“The passenger compartment of the Volvo EX30 remained stable during the frontal offset test. Dummy values showed good knee and thigh protection for both the driver and front passenger. However, Volvo could not demonstrate that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different heights and seating positions, leading to a deduction in the rating. Analysis of the deceleration of the “impact trolley” during the test and of the deformable barrier after the test showed that the Volvo EX30 would be a friendly impact partner in a frontal collision.

In the test with the fully rigid barrier, rear passenger chest protection was rated as marginal based on dummy compression values. For the driver and rear passenger, protection was otherwise good. Maximum points were obtained in the side barrier test, with good protection for all critical body parts. In the heavier side barrier test, protection of the chest was weak, but that of other body parts was good.

Control of excursion (the degree to which a body is thrown to the opposite side of the vehicle during an impact from the opposite side) was adequate. The Volvo EX30 features a measure to reduce injuries between occupants in such impacts. The airbag performed well in EuroNCAP tests, with dummy values showing good protection for both driver and passenger.

Tests of the front seats and head restraints showed good whiplash protection in a rear-end collision. A geometric analysis of the rear seats also indicated good whiplash protection. The car has an advanced eCall system that alerts emergency services in the event of an accident, and a system that prevents secondary collisions after the car has been involved in a collision. Volvo also demonstrated that the doors and windows can be opened to allow occupants to escape in the event of vehicle submersion.”

Volvo EX30: protecting occupant children

On the occupant child protection component, EuroNCAP says the following:

“In both the frontal-offset test and the side barrier test, the Volvo EX30 provided good protection to all critical body parts of the 6- and 10-year-old dummies, earning the car the maximum score in this part of the assessment. The front passenger airbag can be disabled so that a rear-facing child seat can be used in that seat. Clear information is provided to the driver about the status of the airbag, which was rated positively.

The Volvo EX30 is not equipped with a “child presence detection” system, which provides an alert if it recognizes that a child or infant may have been left in the car. All child seats for which the Volvo EX30 is designed could be correctly installed and placed in the car, with the exception of the iSize child seat in the middle rear seat position.”

Volvo EX30: vulnerable road users

On the vulnerable road users section, EuroNCAP says the following:

“Protection of the head of a struck pedestrian or cyclist was mostly good or adequate, with poor results only on the rigid A-pillars of the windshield. Protection of the pelvis was good at almost all test sites. Thigh, knee and shin protection was good at all test locations, giving the car the maximum score in this part of the assessment.

The Volvo’s autonomous emergency braking system (AEB) can respond to vulnerable road users and other vehicles. The system’s response to pedestrians was adequate, but pedestrian protection behind the car is not enabled by default. The system’s performance in tests of response to cyclists was good, but protection against “thruing” (in which a door is suddenly opened in the path of an oncoming cyclist behind) is not on by default at the start of each trip. The performance of the AEB system was good in tests of response to bikers, with a maximum score in this part of the assessment.”

Volvo EX30: Safety Assist

About the Safety Assist component, EuroNCAP says the following:

“The performance of the autonomous emergency braking system (AEB) was good in tests of its response to other vehicles, avoiding collisions in most tests. A seat belt reminder is standard for both front and rear seats. The car comes standard with a direct driver status monitoring system that detects driver fatigue and various forms of distraction.

The Lane Assist system subtly corrects the vehicle’s course if it is in danger of drifting out of lane and also intervenes in more critical situations. The speed assist system recognizes the local speed limit. The driver can choose to have the speed limiter set automatically by the system.”
