Electric car considerably more expensive to insure than gasoline car

May 1, 2023

A lot more expensive

The comparison site examined what it costs to insure ten new electric cars. “In doing so, we also looked at what it costs to insure a gasoline car with a similar purchase price of the same brand,” said Amanda Bulthuis, money & insurance expert at Geld.nl. “This shows that car insurance for electric cars is on average 12.50 euros per month more expensive than for gasoline cars. So on an annual basis, that amounts to 150 euros.”

Higher purchase price

It should be noted, according to Bulthuis, that electric cars are by default more expensive than gasoline cars of similar model and design. “Because we selected cars of similar value in this study, this means that the gasoline models tend to be much more luxurious versions than electric cars. For the electric cars, we assumed the most standard version. However, had we assumed similar models and versions for electric and gasoline cars, the electric cars are on average 250 euros more expensive to insure per year.”

Higher claims burden

That premiums for electric cars are so much higher is because the claims burden for electric cars is higher, several auto insurers indicate. “In practice, the repair costs of electric vehicles are often higher than those of gasoline cars. This is because repairs of electric cars require technical and specialized skills that not every repairman possesses. Moreover, the replacement cost of a battery can quickly rise to amounts in excess of 4,500 euros,” says a spokesman for Allianz Direct.

Heavier

According to many major insurers, another factor is that electric cars have a higher weight, making them more likely to cause (injury) damage in the event of a collision, thus increasing the cost of claims.
